    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

prolapse in male gecko, hemipenis (thanks for your help)

Has his poop changed at all? Is going? My male stopped going, until the vet amputated. He believed that he was holding it in due to the pain. I would also use the prep h as it may help with discomfort/pain.
 
oh he's going alright (atleast urates), sometimes he goes on me when applying the stuff so i have to wipe him off and re-apply whatever i am applying. I am unsure if he is pooping though he seems to be at the same weight but hasn't seemed to eat any new mealworms (the bowl is untouched, even by the females)

I put honey on this AM, i'll check on him when i get home today
 
OK so I'm going to take him in tomarrow, it's probably going to cost like $250 (I called back the place that quoted me $160 and they quoted me different and then acted like pricks so forget that), but i think i can haggle the costs down. What counts is this vet has "care credit" which is like a vet credit card. that'll be really nice b/c I'll be settling on the condo soon.

So tomarrow they're gonna look at him and make an assessment, see if its worth doing, if the doctor's opinion is grim he might have to be put down :(

okie dokie, he's at the vet right now, total came to $300.00

I am using both Doctors Elizabeth Embree and Jerry A. Hinn. Both were kind and good to their word, they quoted me anywhere between $250-300 and kept their word. Infact the estimate came out higher at the office but they discounted off the $200 bucks the machine had priced for everything that had to be done. Dr. Hinn said "I gave you a quote and i intend to keep what i told you over the phone" so major props there.

Whats nice is i have care credit so i have 3 months to pay off the balance.

I had a male prolapse a week or so ago, and tried a sugar solution, but it didn't work. I found out later it wasn't strong enough. My reptile vet told me that to get the solution strong enough I needed to boil a cup of water and keep adding sugar until the sugar would no longer dissolve. It was very thick. Then apply the cooled syrup to the prolapse. As the solution dries, keeping adding more. If the prolapse doesn't go back in within 8 hours of doing this it never will (at least that is what one doctor says) and will need to be removed. Perhaps if I had made my first solution the right way he wouldn't have required the surgery. Between my to weak solution, then the proper solution, my poor leo spent a lot of time with his butt in sugar water. The surgery cost me $35. Yup.....$35!!!!! I was shocked. (I keep waiting for the phone call informing me of their error) My regular vet was out of town so I had to take him to the other doctor and that is all she charged. Last year I had a chameleon with a prolapse that needed removed and it cost $130. I think even the $130 is reasonable.

I know this information is to late for you, heck the proper sugar recipe was to late for me even.....but then it's nice to know these things to be ready if it happens again. I like the Prep H idea and will try that with the sugar water if I get cursed with this in the future.
 
Well he's looking better, pretty active, hasn't ate or pooped yet but his wounds are scabbing up (last night he had alittle bit of bleeding).

Doc said just apply neosporin and he needs to be seperated for a few weeks. Sound good?
 
Oh yeah one last thing; the doc suggested (if anyone else has a prolapsed gecko) try a vitamin e tablet applied to the prolapse, it's suppose to help alot
 
I would suggest seperation of at least 3 months. Even though he's now a she (sorry couldn't resisit) he may still try to breed, and may cause it to not heal completely. My guy is on rest till next year, even though my vet said three months.
 
:) Thanks for all your help, you were very kind to take time out of your day to offer help. 3 months is do-able, not a problem there. what are signs that the operation isn't taking well?

After he's healed, since he has testies, will he still have the urge to... hump and bump? Is there any satisfaction to that? lol

And for those who read this (after their geckos have prolapsed and they are in the early stages) i know what I paid for might frighten you. I only paid so much because the vet was kinda in a ritzy area and I live VERY close to washington DC, so inflation might be higher here than some places. that's probably why there are such extreme differences in prices. best bit is to use that herp vet website and talk to the vets and use one that has a price that is more in your comfort zone (and how professional they act.)

Satisfaction...LMAO....I don't know about that, wish they could talk.

He may try to breed you never know.

So it's been about a week since his surgery. He doesn't seem to be eating as of late, but he did shed. He weighted 67 grams when i took him into the vet, not sure what his current weight is but he's still big.

theres something i think is strange though

Everytime i pick him up he whips around (not strange) but he'll "expell" from his bottom a clear liquid that is without smell. Sometimes a urate follows with this liquid.

Today when applying neosporin (i apply it twice a day) there seemed to be a "pouch" or a "bubble/pocket" of clear fluid barely poking out of his vent.

Also is there suppose to be a tiny bit of the hemipenis slightly sticking out of the vent?

Some geckos will do this when they are not happy about being picked up. Mostly males will do it. Don't think that's anything to worry about. He may be a little sore still and just doesn't want to be handled.

My guy only had a single amputation, with a double I'm not sure if that happens or if he needs to be looked at again, to make sure it's where it should be.

Well i remember when i dropped him off the vet suggested a check-up to see how he is doing. He is looking alot better compaired to last week (it dripped blood occationally and just looked like a bloody mess. Doesn't look half as bad, just not sure what I should be looking for.

So this fluid that he's "flinging" at me, is it urine?

Maybe i should give him another week or two.

How long did it take for your guy to start eating again?

Shedding i think is a good sign.

I have not seen your gecko, but I would be worried about any fluid filled pocket on any reptile, this may be an abscess?? An abscess is a secondary infection of sorts. Did you receive any antibiotics from your vet? This would help him along the recoup time. If you haven't any you should get back for a recheck with the vet anyways. If he is shedding that should be a good sign. Try some different foods to stimulate the appetite. Have you tried Phoenix worms? Our leopard gecko would wait in his bowl for days after feeding these. Hope this helps
 
After my blazing blizzards prolapse operation he was off his feed for about a week and a half, but is now chowing down to make up for lost time.
