In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Is it just me or are there others that have problems with there rats chewing threw the corners on tub. I have replaced so many. Has anybody seen metal ones that size.

The first time a rat group chews through a tub you have to eliminate all the rats in that tub because if one did it the all learned to do it and if you spread those rats out they will teach others to do it.

Get untreated wood and put a few blocks in the cages. That will curb the need to chew on the plastic.

I have 2 six tub racks using cement lixing tubs from Lowes,Over the last year I have had 2 cases where the rats chewed thru, once because a flaw in the rack and once,I have no idea how they did it.I put blocks of wood or branches from my fruit trees in the tubs and haven't had any trouble since.Even when they chewed out they came back, they know where they live, lol.

I put little pieces of cardboard between the rails and my tubs to push the tubs up against the wire mesh. The closer they are the harder it is for the rats to get their noses in the gap to chew. U have to pull out all the "shims" everytime I want to slide out a tub but it keeps me from having to buy new tubs. So far so good. I think I showed briefly what I did in my most recent video on youtube. Link is below if you want to check that out.

I went and redid my racks pushed it snug to top. Any holes I patched woth a hot glue gun and left over hardware cloth. All holes where somewhat small and have not had any chew since I fixed.

Ive only had asf rats chew threw my home depot tubs. Normal feeder rats are great about.not chewing through. The only problem I have with the mice is the younger hoppers squeezing through the 1/2 inch hardware cloth so when I start my rodent business back up ill use the home depot tubs for the rats and mice but with the mice ill use 1/4 inch cloth instead and with the asf ill use kitty litter pans from Amazon.

I know this is an older thread, but I'm hoping the Home Depot tub using folks will chime in here with some experience.

I'm looking at building some rat racks, and as usual am ordering my stuff online to pick it up in the morning. (Much easier for me) I see that Home Depot has two different tubs.

Model # 04925
polyethylene
7 gallons
27.5 x 19.5 x 6
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25e...=-1&keyword=mortar&storeId=10051#.UFtrklHAFb0

Model # 887101A (has a notch/hole in the front lip of the tub)
PVC
10 gallons
27.6 x 24.8 x 6.5
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25e...=-1&keyword=mortar&storeId=10051#.UFtrilHAFb0

Anyone laid hands on both of these? Is one stronger or better for rats than the other?

Thanks!

Just tossing this out there lowes carrys them as well. I like the ones at lowes seems to be a better tub

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated!

I tried the ones at lowes with past rack builds, and they always seemed to have crinkles or dents inward in the corners that the rats were able to get hold of. Just figured I'd give the HD ones a go, since they always look so nice and not dented in, in the pictures I've seen of others' rack builds.

With the hd ones I had issues with the little hole there gives a spot to chew. I made the tubs as tight as I could. Also weeded out chewers helped.

We have been using both size tubs for a couple years now and the only difference is size.

We use the larger tub for our rat colonies 1.4 and then the smaller tubs are for grow outs and mice colonies 1.6.

We also place chunks of wood in the tubs for them to chew on. When we find a tub that has been chewed on, we rivet a piece of aluminum over the hole and then feed off the group in that tub. It is cheaper for us to fix the tub then replace it.

Thanks

Love those tub toppers. Weren't you making and selling them for a while? Very clean and neat!

I ended up swinging by lowes to see what they had, and bought a whole stack of theirs. Once I got them home, I compared them to some old lowes tubs I have, and there's no comparison anymore. These are a much more rigid plastic that doesn't seem to pop in, in the corners.

Now I just have to find the time to sit down and make some rat racks.

Thank you! And yes we still do sell them. This system does work great for us and the bonus is that I don't have to build any racks! Please post or send me some pics of your rodent room. Thanks

John that is a very nice setup there. Couple questions. how are the tubs held up do you have supports on side and under the tubs? what holds the screen on the tub? I must say you have me thinkin about a revamp on my shed.

We have support on the bottom of the tubs.

These are the only two pics I have at this time. I can take more if need be. The side opposite the food bin has an extra flange that locks the cover onto the tub. Then the weight of the food keeps the front of the cover secure. We clean the rodents on Saturday and would be happy to take more pics. Let me know what you would like to see. Thanks
