While I understand the concern about decreasing the insulation by poking holes, heat packs need air to function. I have, on a couple of occasions (both in shipping & receiving), had heat packs that stopped working in transit & heated up again once the box was opened.
Steph, you would FREAK if you ever ordered from Prehistoric Pets, lol. They have a 1-1.5 inch hole cut through the top (both flaps & the styro) with a piece of screen covering the hole. The heat pack is taped to the styro, covering the hole (at least I think that is the way it was set up). I have received animals from them during the winter, and all have been warm upon arrival (and they use UPS, so I have to actually wait for delivery)
