In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Rick Sisco - Sisco Reptiles

This post is long over due. I received a pair of pastel bp's from Rick as part of a breeding loan owed me by another party.
Rick did the pairing, breeding, hatching, and shipping of this pair. The babies are eating and doing very well. Thanx Rick for a job well done!

My tegu that I ordered from Rick arrived dead, and was package wrong. Not to mention I paid I believe $50 for shipping and she didn't arrive until around 3 pm. After contacting Rick he asked me to spend an extra $40 or so dollars to overnight her body to him even though I had several photos from when she arrived proving she was, in fact, dead. After a bit of arguing Rick finally agreed to send me a new tegu in a box WITH insulation this time and he arrived alive. Also, I paid for a Chacoan Tegu, then learned that Rick was just calling his White Heads Chacoans, therefore I received a White Headed Tegu, not what I originally wanted. I was very disappointed in the whole ordeal and won't be purchasing from Rick again.

These statements are not all fact. Instead of actually trying to explain everything out, I will try to compile all of the communication between this person and myself. If you look at the posts this person has made here (3), 1 is to bad guy me, and 1 is to good guy someone whom I recently had a personal falling out with, even though Katie admits never even dealing with him. The bad guy post she is giving me is false. Please give me a little time to compile all of the emails with headers and present them on my behalf.

Rick Sisco

Man, that was a major PITA to copy and paste all of the email communication between Katie and I, including the headers, but it's done. I will try to post it below.

Thanks for the reply Rick!

I do have a question. I have been reading your site and you said that you have your tegus "clicker-trained". Did you just use a reward system? If so...please explain...if not then how? These creatures are so intelligent. Not that my current reptiles aren't...but my crested geckos would have NOTHING to do with me. They just enjoy their food and space. Hehe! Thanks!

I just click a clicker three times, really fast, every time I feed them =
or give them treats and they associate that sound with food. Just like a =
cat comes when they hear a can opener. ;) I also give treats when they =
come to me to reinforce the habit.

Sorry to keep bothering you with all these questions but I've got a few more...
For bedding, can I just use Eco-Earth or will it hold too much humidity? Generally mine dries out perfectly during the day for my geckos but holds the mistings well for night. I like naturalistic set ups so I may try something like that. What are the best plants that he won't munch on? Only thing I'm worried up with plants is I know they like to borrow so he might dig them up. Also, someone told me an adult Tegu eats from 5-6 adult mice a day...is that true? From what I understand there diet consists of mostly greens at the adult age, then mice, then insects. Sorry, another one...do you offer greens to babies and juvies like adults, just less? Thanks!

It's not bother.

For bedding I use cypress mulch as you can keep it humid and it doesn't =
try. I have heard of others using Eco-Earth, but I do not generally =
recommend it because the damp Eco-Earth can stick to the tegus feet and =
then dry, sometimes cutting off blood circulation to the toes. They will =
not generally eat plants, but the plants can't be delicate as they will =
explore them and sometimes this causes damage to the plant. Tegus do not =
really each much at all in the way of vegetation. They eat fruits and =
meat. For fruits I feed strawberry, grapes, kiwi, banana, blueberry, =
tomatoes, melon, etc. For meats they get insects (crickets, roaches, =
superworms, etc), they get lean raw ground turkey (from your shopping =
center), and they each frozen/thawed (prekilled) mice. I feed them a =
helping of fruit first and then offer the meat. I feed hatchlings one =
large meal every day. I feed juvies every other day and I feed adults =
every three days. I offer the same foods through out there life cycle in a =
50/50 amount.

Katie,

Your tegu was shipped today as requested. It will come in via UPS on =
Thursday (Tomorrow, the 2nd)
=20
You have checked the temps locally and stated that will be around 90F. If =
the weather gets above 90F, let me know and I will contact UPS and =
get the package stopped at the UPS center and you can pick it up there =
to avoid the hatchling being loaded onto a hot truck for delivery.
=20
Your tracking number is: 1Z019X601393891853
=20
Here is a direct link for your convenience:
http://wwwapps.ups.com/ietracking/tracking.cgi?tracknum=3D1Z019X601393891=

=20
I realize you will be excited when the package arrives, but please drop =
me an email immediately after the package arrives so I know it arrived =
safely. I will check my email often tomorrow.
=20
Thank you for your business...

Hello Rick, the tegu has yet to arrive. According to my tracking she was in Murfreesboro (like, 10 min. from Smyrna) around 8 this morning but no sign of the UPS truck yet. I'll not leave my house until she is here, and I'm probably going to beat the UPS guy when he gets here, hehe just kidding. I'm just VERY anxious to see her. According to my computer it is 92* F out at the moment, and you said to contact you if it got over 90* F and so I did. Please contact me back soon as to if you are going to tell UPS to hold her somewhere for me to pick her up. Thanks!

I can only get UPS to hold it prior to it getting put on the truck and =
sent "Out for Delivery". I could have called this morning and have them =
hold it at the customer center before it went on the truck.

92F should be fine as long as it's not a lot hotter in the truck.

Rick

Katie,

On no! I am so sorry to hear that. I have never lost one in all the =
years I have been shipping. I checked the weather on weather.com and it =
said it got up to 93F actual, and 'feels like' 95F with the heat index. =
I will still cover it under my guarantee. Just put the hatchling in your =
freezer and Friday morning put it in a box with an ice pack and ship it =
back to me via UPS Next Day Air for Saturday delivery.

Once I get it, I will send you out a new hatchling (I will ship Monday =
for Tuesday), but this time I will need the address to the closest UPS =
Customer Center so I can ship directly there and you and drive out and =
pick it up first thing in the AM. (normally around 8:30am) According to =
UPS I can not ship AM Delivery to your location. Since we lost one =
hatchling, I would not want to ship if it has to go out for delivery on =
the truck or the same thing may happen.

Sincerely,

Rick Sisco

How much will shipping her back to you cost? I don't have the money to do so. I have plenty of pictures of her. I'll get the UPS address.

We would like her back so that we can donate her carcass to the local =
university for studying in their herp classes instead of just seeing her =
go into the trash. There is no sense for her death to be worthless. If =
you need to, you can pre-freeze her and then ship her with ice packs via =
UPS Two Day, which would be around $15 to $20.

I will guarantee the tegu hatchling and I will cover the $50 shipping =
for the new hatchling. As per our terms, we do not generally cover =
shipping costs in the guarantee, but I feel it would be the professional =
thing to do.

Rick,

I think I shouldn't have to spend more money to send the tegu you sent me that died in transit. If you want her body then you can pay for the shipping, or I can donate her to a University here. I have pictures, and can take more tomorrow, of her carcass if you need them.

If you do send the new tegu for Tuesday delivery next week will their be insulation this time and a cold pack, because it's going to be just as hot? This girl was burning up when I pulled her out of the container. I've always been told, and have received/shipped animals, with boxes lined with Styrofoam insulation. And if too hot, a cold pack. Also, UPS does have a "by 10:30 am" shipping for my house as I have used it many times. I don't know why they would tell you otherwise.

Thanks for getting back to me in a timely manner and recognizing that this is a joint effort to sort out the unfortunate death of the tegu I purchased from you. Please contact me back by email as soon as you can.

-Katie-

Katie,

I will ship Monday for Tuesday as long as the weather is going to be =
below 90F. I will take your word that the tegu is deceased. I do not =
need pictures. I would request that you do follow through and locate a =
local University that does have a herpetological class and see if they =
would have use of the body for class study. Please email me the name and =
number of the person you donated it to so that I can get in touch with =
them.

As far as my packaging.. I have shipped hundreds of tegus with the same =
packaging and the same method with no loss of life. This is the first =
and hopefully the last time I have lost a hatchling. I am upset that the =
hatchling died, not because of the cost to resend another, but for the =
fact that I handle all of my babies right out of the egg and I do become =
attached to all of them.

As a convenience I have located the address, phone number and business =
hours of the closest manned UPS Customer Center to you. I will ship Hold =
For Pickup and you can pick it up at your local UPS Customer Center when =
they open to the public, which is 9am. This way the hatchling does not =
need to be placed on a hot truck at all. The UPS CC is 18 miles from you =
(about 24 minutes).

I will ship "Hold for Pickup" to..

Katie Shinkle
c/o UPS CC
801 Commercial Ct
Murfreesboro, TN 37129

You can contact them on your way in (800-742-5877) with your tracking =
number and they can have the box right on the counter in the climate =
controlled room waiting for you.

Sincerely,

Rick Sisco

Rick, thanks for getting back to me. I'll keep track of the weather until then. I'll look around at the herpetoligical classes and such to see what I can do. Thanks for getting the information for me, and I'll ask off for Tuesday so I'll be able to pick him/her up. Do you know what hatchling I'll be getting? Male or female, just so I know?

I have the info somewhere around here. I'd just need to find the index =

Katie,

Tomorrow it says your weather will get up to 88F by 10am, and it will =
hit 97F by 4pm. If the package is lost or late, this could cause an =
issue. I can not ship with a cold pack because it's only 67F here right =
now and will get down to 57F by tonight (before the package leaves =
Maine) As such, the tegu will get too cold and would probably die too.

I can ship the baby in a foam box, which will help keep the temp =
fluctuations stable, but if the box is late or misplaced, we will still =
run into a heat issue. You must keep a close eye on the tracking (as =
will I) so we can monitor is the package goes off course.

I guess my email didn't get through earlier. I emailed you back around 10:30 saying he arrived and is doing GREAT. He has already chowed down on some crickets, mealworms, a super worm, and a pinkie and is very active and curious. Thanks!

Conclusion?

My last email from Katie was a series of photos of her happily holding her new baby tegu! There was no text in that email.

------
Sorry I had to break it all up, it kept giving me errors.

Rick Sisco

Please also note that Katie did NOT turn over the dead tegu hatchling's body to an educational/herpetological dept or school as she promised to do.

Rick

Here is one of the pictures from the last email that Katie sent me.

Xander%20Aug.%207,%202007%20061.jpg

That doesn't look like the face of someone disgusted with the way I handled the issue. (Though the face was 'caught' in a funny pose)

Rick Sisco

Well looks to me like there was a problem and you took care of it Rick. Though I think you should always use insulated boxes and I know that Fedex requires you to use them to ship reptiles.. Randy

I read every email and I have to agree with Randy that the whole situation as far as the DOA is concerned was professionally handeled.

We talk a lot about how a "good guy" can be measured by the way one handles the deals that go wrong. The situation was handeled regardless of any mistakes made. Which is why it's puzzling that she made a bad guy post.

If that was all the emails this part of her complaint was extremely exaggerated.

You asked her to send it back, she asked how much. You offered a cheaper method of sending the tegu back. There was really no argument and you didn't even require her to send the pictures.

Now that I look back at her original post, I guess the reason she made it is because she believes she didn't get a Chacoan.

Randy,

I had shipped during summer with those same boxes for years and that was my first and only tegu lost during shipping. I use insulated boxes during the winter and on really hot summer days. To this day, several hundred hatchlings shipped, I have only lost that one tegu hatchling, and as you can see.. I did treat her with respect and I replaced the tegu, paid the shipping, etc.. even though recently I was made to look poorly in another thread concerning my Terms of Services being too "tight" or "restrictive".

So, concerning her post...

My tegu that I ordered from Rick arrived dead

True. Accidents happen, but I was professional and took care of the issue without any hassle.

and was package wrong.

The original package with the same box I use every summer for shipping hatchlings under the same conditions and that was the only hatchling tegu I have ever lost due to shipping.

Not to mention I paid I believe $50 for shipping and she didn't arrive until around 3 pm.

She did pay $50. The package was shipped UPS Next Day Air. The customer center stated that AM delivery was not a viable option in her area.

After contacting Rick he asked me to spend an extra $40 or so dollars to overnight her body to him

I asked her to return the body to me, overnight, 2 day shipping, etc. I turn any deceased reptile body I can over to a local college who use them in their studies. She didn't want to spend any amount to return it, but offered to turn find a herp class in her area that could use it. Upon later contact she told me she could find no schools in her area offering herp classes. I did some research and sent her a list of five schools with herp classes and she never responded. I dropped the subject.

even though I had several photos from when she arrived proving she was, in fact, dead.

I never requested proof the tegu hatchling was dead. I took her word.

After a bit of arguing Rick finally agreed to send me a new tegu in a box WITH insulation this time and he arrived alive.

There was no arguing at all on my behalf. I was as professional and flexible as I could be. I made no demands, I did not hide behind my terms of service, I just did what any professional would do.

Also, I paid for a Chacoan Tegu, then learned that Rick was just calling his White Heads Chacoans, therefore I received a White Headed Tegu, not what I originally wanted.

This is a whole new can of worms. Plain and simple, my "white heads" are "chacoans", just as Ron St Pierres "white heads" were "chacoans". There was recent discussion related to the chacoans, a name termed by Ron St Pierre. In the end, there is no way for Ron to prove the origins of his chacoans, which is probably why he stopped using the term a couple years ago and now uses "white heads". I have no way of providing documentation that mine came from the region of Chaco either, so I am now using the term "white heads", and Bobby Hill can not prove the origins of his, which is why his are now called "extreme giants." There is no way for anyone with a "chacoan" to prove it's origins. In the name of being as honest as I can, I decided to stop using the name "chacoan" too.

I was very disappointed in the whole ordeal and won't be purchasing from Rick again.

She was obviously not disappointed with the whole ordeal, as shown in the email and pictures. If anyone should have a "Bad Guy" post, it should be Katie.

I apologize for all of the drama, but I felt the need to clear my name.

Good for you Rick. I've never had issues with Rick, and I've gotten some killer reds from him. He's always made time to answer all my questions, and i have NO idea why Katie would say you acted anything other than helpful and professional!

Well Rick, you wanted to bring my name into to this, so I will add some truth to this mix.

Is it not true that you sold babies from these same animals the year before as normals? But then changed the name to Chacoan after you found out I had the true Chacoan giants?

You shipped this animal and it died, you claimed it was your "first" DOA, was that true?

The fact of the matter is, Rick was selling normal white heads as Chacoan giants, I have many white heads, none of them are Giants or Chacoans, they are just a lighter colored normals.

As for Ron, he expained that the true Chacoans are the largest of all the tegus. Ricks are far from Giants, they are not even as large as the reds, not alone the Chacoan Giants.

This is what she paid for:

However, Rick does not have any of these at all and sent her a normal Argentine tegu. His tegus are not Chacoan Giants, and were being sold as just that.

This is his adult tegus, note the size difference, there is nothing Giant about them, the one on the left is the one he is calling a Chacoan Giant:

I will also add, at one time years ago Ron did call white heads Chacoan, but he changed that long ago. He calls the ones Rick claims are Chacoan as normal white heads now and has for a long time.
