Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

RJ's Exotics inquiry

rjs exotics

there is no dought he has happy customers many i am shure but the fact is he has had problems with many people as you can see on the board. Yes every dealear and breeder has there problems and posatives but in my opinion and as it seems a few others on the board is just buyer beware you get what you pay for and who you deal with.

Here is my story (long).

About a month ago I called Rob and got Mike on the phone instead. I asked if he would buy my last two crested geckos from me and he said he would (I am "RhacBreeder" from some other forums). I brought the two cresteds in and showed them to him. He was excited that I was giving him a female, along with a yearling. I asked what he would buy them for and he said it would be better to trade. Since I thought he was a good guy, and I could always use another BP I asked what we could do to get me a male BP. He told me he would trade straight out and I agreed b/c again I thought he was a good guy and wanted to do further business with him. One of the other workers kept showing me his "wicked cool" black back normal. Everytime I looked at any other male he shoved the black back in my face. Since the black back was nice looking, good weight and alert, I took him. He immediately tagged my buddy in the wrist and I laughed and we went home. Rob had told me that he has only been eating rodents, mice to be exact. About a week after getting him home, he starts deficating bloody stool. In that week I had been warned about Rob, so I searched this website and found this thread, a day late and a dollar short. Needless to say I brought the snake back to Rob. He took it out and said he's fine he's fine blah blah blah... He took out the snake and checked for a broken back, and for a prolapsed rectum/hemipenes. Now, I am not an idiot. I would have known if the snake had a broken back, and I would have know if he was prolapsed. Rob then said something along the lines of 'Well maybe his last meal gave him the poops.' He then explained how one of his workers fed him quail instead of rodents for his last meal. I asked why he didn't tell me this before and he fed me a little more BS. I knew immediately that he was BS-ing me, but did not feel like arguing. He told me the animal was parasite free blah blah blah. I then ended the conversation and took a look around. I found a dead baby ball python, and he yelled at me for pulling the bin out that it was in. I also saw that he had "quarentined" another male BP. The reason I know it was a male is because it was one I was thinking about getting. The sub-adult was approximately 3 feet long, and was being "quarentined" in a container the same size as the containers that NERD keeps there baby ball pythons in. I moved the container a little and the snake started doing flips litterally in that tiny tiny container. Right then and there I decided that not only was I not returning the ball I already had for fear that it would end up dead very soon, I was also going to do all I can to discourage other people from dealing with Rob. I took my snake to the vet, and found out that he is LOADED with protazoan flagellates. The vet said alot of captive animals have small amounts of parasites that the animal could either deal with, or be easily treated. He said mine was INFESTED with parasites. The Dr. gave him a treatment, and I have to go back to get more treatments. Should I bother trying to stick Rob with the bill?? It was only $50.35 thanks to my AWESOME vet, but hey I never asked for a sick snake. After reading this I am glad that my snake was not in the condition that some of the poor snakes you guys got were. DON'T DEAL WITH RJ'S EXOTICS IN NASHUA NH. He may have a couple of satisfied customers but they might be newbies that have not been in the hobby long enough to know better, plus I have a broken watch that's right twice a day. -Joe D.

Joe, I'm glad to see you posted this here. I'm also glad to hear that the snake is doing better.

After having been in his store a couple more times since my first visit, and having heard Joe's story as it developed on another forum, I don't think I'll ever set foot in there again. I honestly don't know where people like RJ come from, and I don't want to! Though I wish to God they'd get out of this hobby, for the sake of the animals as well as its other participants.

Good luck with the black back, Joe.

Despite what was said above I'll go out on a limb and say that I had good experiences with them so far. I picked up 0.2 adult Western Hognose and a juvie Charcoal Motley female from them at a show a few months back and they are all doing just fine. I also bought something else from them at another show back in January but I can't recall what I bought, no issues from any of the animals I purchased at that show so again no issues with RJ's.

Maybe there is a lot of shady crap going on there and maybe they are selling sick animals but I can only comment on what I've experienced and that was positive. I looked over their table at the last show and don't recall seeing anything unusual or sickly.

The stuff they have at shows usually looks pretty good. I know I wouldn't buy any of it, though....

I'm glad to hear you had a good experience, anyway!

Like I said, I have a broken watch that's right twice a day. I won't deny that he has a few happy customers but I already said that.
I brought snake in for it's final de-worming and here is what happened...

I had my ball get his last dose of Flagyl at the vet today, and then I called Rob. I told him that I took the snake to the vet. and that he was loaded with the flagellates. Rob then asked me why I took the snake to the vet. instead of to the shop. He said that he would have de-wormed the snake for free and he told me I was stupid for spending the money. I then told him that it was his reputation that had made me not go back to him, and that if I had known that he had a bad rep. I would never have gone into his shop. He then told me that he does 500,000 dollars of business a year, and that he doesn't care what people say about his business. He then told me that I was being a dick, and he had sold 50 reptiles today so my snake didn't matter and he didn't need my business. I then told him that if he was the professional he claimed to be, he should handle our conversation in a more professional manner. I added that if a customer has a complaint then the last thing he should do is insult that customer. I told him I wasn't trying to be a d*ck, and told him to watch his mouth. He then told me he "was sinking to my level...". I told him that I was not being a d*ck, and that I was simply trying to give him advice such as treating all the other male bp's that my snake was previously in contact with. He then told me that I should have gone to him, and that I should have known that he would treat my snake for free and that all the other bp's that were in the tank with mine were sold. I know for a fact that he did not sell all three bp's that my snake was housed with in a matter of a month. When I had brought my snake to him when this first started he said that there was no way that my snake had parasites, and if the problem did not clear up within a couple of weeks, he would do a fecal and we would go from there. I had a fecal sample when I went into his shop the first time, so why didn't he do it then? I asked him that and he said the sample I had was no good. The sample I had was the whole stool and it was in a plastic bag. It was fine. It was the same sample that the Dr. used last week when I got him to the vet. I told Rob that he talks a good game, and if he really loved his animals he would give them away to people who will take care of them. He was not happy and kept bs-ing me. He told me a couple of weeks ago that quail had given him diarhea, but today he told me that he never said that and that he had said that diarhea can be a SOURCE of parasites. Last I checked a snake did not get parasites from it's OWN diarhea, unless it already hosted the parasites. So the fiasco is over, and between my two posts I have outlined my first and hopefully your last experience with Rob and his company. Thanks for reading and happy herping. -Joe

I would just like to add my 2 cents. I am one of those "happy" customers, at least so far anyway. I have bought a burmese python, three red tail boas and a tegu from them. I had a problem with a young red tail ( internal parasites ) but they treated the snake and did all they could to take care of the problem. The snake is now very healthy and eating and growing very well now. Rob and Mike have always been very helpfull and courteous to me. With the amount of animals he takes in and sells there are bound to be a few sick animals, and i have seen my share of stupid customers that dont know how to take care of the animals they buy, so its not all their fault. I find it hard to believe they would intentionally sell a sick animal. Im sure they get these animals from the same sources as every other reptile dealer in the area. I am concerned about the internet purchases people are having problems with, not getting what they asked or paid for; if true, that is quite sad indeed. RJ's is moving into a new store location soon. Maybe the extra room and cleaner facilities will improve some of the problems people are having with them. I will continue my relationship with RJ's.

Jim,
This is Joe, we met at PETCO today. I just wanted to say that I am glad you found the boards. I am sending you a private message so check it if you can! Thanks and again nice meeting you! -Joe Decareau

my personal experiences

I have bought a few reptiles from RJ's and they have all passed on. In

my first experience I bought a taiwan beauty from him for $75.00 and it lived

for only 4 days, I called him about it and he said that it was healthy when it

left the shop and that he couldn't do anything about it. I also bought a 12

foot female amethystine scrub python from him at the reptile extravaganza in

Seabrook NH in February. I saw Rob a few weeks later and he asked if he

could buy it back, and he regretted selling it and that he has a big male he

wanted to breed it to, I said I really didn't want to sell it but if he wanted it

back that bad I would sell it back to him with the promise that if/when it

reproduced I would get a hatchling from him at no charge. Well I saw him at

the next reptile show in Seabrook in June and I asked if she had reproduced

or anything and the answer I got was....and I am quoting "Dude I don't know

what happened, I came in the other morning and it was like she exploded, all

her insides were on the outside". Well I felt bad and said sorry to hear it but

something wasn't sitting right with this conversation. So I inquired of Kevin

and Kara at NERD about a snake "exploding" and was told that they had

never heard of such a thing. I took it as Rob's way of saying your not getting

anything from me. I later told Rob what Kara had said about it and he then

decided to tell me not to listen to Kara and that she was a loudmouth and

that she didn't know what she was talking about, and Kara had nothing nice

to say about anyones snakes except ones that came from Kara or Kevin at

NERD. I have been doing business with Kara and Kevin for a few years now

and I have nothing but nice things to say about them. Kevin helped me get

my Ball pythons and Jungle carpets to breed and even helped me mix my

vermaculite properly (proud dad to several carpet pythons and a couple of

new ball pythons now). Even now as I am typing this Kevin has my adult male

jungle carpet python and he is nursing it back to health for me(RI and mouth

rot from cooling). After several trips to the Vet and several hundred dollars

Kara suggested I bring my carpet in and let Kevin try his hand at curing this

guy. Well I stopped by NERD on Friday and much to my amazement I found a

happier healthier snake then I dropped off and was told as soon as he eats I

can take him home. In closing what I would have to say is that if you are

looking for a quality reptile in the New Hampshire/New England area , or even

across the country STAY AWAY from RJ'S Exotics and head on over to

NERD/Zoo Creatures in Plaistow,NH.

I could go on about more dealings with RJ's but I think that is good enough for now.
Just my opinion, :dgrin:

"Dude I don't know

Someone on NERD forum did mention that happening with a monitor... Never heard of it with a snake, though. I tend to agree with Kara's assessment...

How recently was that transaction? I do recall seeing one or two big, healthy scrubs last time I went in there, though I think that may have been before the Seabrook show...

Buying from RJs at shows

At the hamburg PA show a few months ago I saw that the RJs table was letting go of some adult "female" BPs for a low price so I checked them out. I was VERY hesitant to buy any "female" ball pythons at any show, but was somewhat coaxed into the deal by the people at RJs table. OVER and OVER they gave me the RJs guarantee (which apparently in real life doesn't mean sh*t) that this animal was infact a female. To make a long story short the ball did indeed turn out to be male, so I called RJs and they said they would replace it, sent the male BP back (had to pay 50 for shipping) then waited through WEEKS of me calling and nagging at them to send me my female. When they finally sent me the new animal, they shipped through USPS in super hot weather with no heat pack, and a non active non feeding ball. In the end I am real unsatisfied and wouldn't recommend RJs. Just my dealings.

Great... I just purchased a Ball from him about 2 weeks ago.. told me it was a female... I guess i have to go find out now... I tried a search on here for RJ's and for some reason it never came up in the searches... Well, hopefully, the ball is a female... and hopefully it isnt sick... seems to be the trend with RJs... Great... Also, this thread needs to be up towards the top of the forum list...

First I just want to say "hello" to everyone. I am a new member here and this is actually my first post. I've known Rob and Jen for a while. I used to go to his stores all the time (this is his third new location) However, I am pretty young and after doing my own research for a few years, I've learned that Rob knows very, very little about basic husbandry practices. It boggles the mind to think I used to take advice from him. Ive bought a few reptiles from him in the past. Some have done well, and others have either died or developed problems so early on I returned them to him. I hate to say it, but it really feels like you'll have SLIGHTLY better luck if he just recieves the animal, rather than the animal being in his "care" for a while. And I know exactly what someone else previously said is talking about: You bring him back an animal and he's all "oh god what did you do to it" as if it were in perfect health before. I was in his shop a couple months ago, noticed mites on an albino retic, and a PILE of 2-3 ft savannah monitors in a cramped glass tank. Needless to say, I havent done business with him in a long, long time. I even stopped buying rodents from there because half the time they just looked disgusting.

I have only been into his store a few times, its a pretty good set-up.. not too bad. Looking at his snakes, he keeps them in a home-made wooden set-up that is heated with a lightbulb from above, but no humidity that i could see.. dont know how he maintains it at all in a cage like that. His large snakes all have bite marks and scars on them in different stages of healing. In a few of the cages there were dead rodents flattened out in the cage like it had been in there for a while and left. I am taking my Ball that i got from him to a vet to get checked out... it looks healthy but after viewing this thread, i would be willing to bet it isnt and i wouldnt doubt it a bit if it was a wild caught.

Sean F

Also, he has a large Aligator snapper in what looks like a 55 gal long tank filled about halfway with water.. noplace for the snapper to get out of the water and absolutely no room to move around... I'm no expert, but i would like to think if i was a turtle... I would like to turn around from time to time, or get out of the water...

i also forgot to add that I know for a fact he misrepresents his animals. When I used to go to his shop I would see animals he just got in or has. Then when I first discovered fauna and kingsnake, I would see the same animals up for sale. He likes to slap "CB" and "Proven Breeders" on everything when that is not true. I've also seen "tail and all toes intact" when that isn't true either.

Small Problem

One of our employees, Jordan, purchased an adult female Red Tegu from RJ about 6 months ago. He paid $350 for her. RJ spoke directly to Jordan and went on and on about how the animal he was getting was "flawless, tame, and NEVER been bred." When she arrived, her overall health was good. She was not horribly aggressive but she will do the tegu death roll from time to time and she will definately bite you if you are not careful. More importantly, she was covered in scars; not flawless by any means. When Jordan contacted RJ to complain about the abundance of scarring, RJ told him that they were "breeding scars" and nothing to be worried about. WRONG ANSWER! How would an animal that has never been bred have breeding scars? RJ's reply was that "she has been with males, but she has never actually laid eggs." Still this did not justify the fact that the "flawless" animal was covered in scars. Here's a nice quote from RJ to Jordan (this just goes to show you never know what your gonna get from some people), "Think of it like a pair of socks, if you don't like the way the look after you already wore them, you can't just take them back." I personally don't see any relation between Tegus and socks, LOL. Anyway you look at it RJ flat out lied to Jordan. Jordan had also showed some interest in a male Red Tegu that RJ had, so RJ offered Jordan a deal on the male. This transaction almost took place, too, but after reviewing the forums, I advised Jordan, and he agreed to take his loss and not bother giving the guy any more of his hard earned money. After several sheds, the scars are still very visible on the Tegu.

bad news rj's
