    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Shipping a dragon? Opinions Please

So I've been really cool working with "this guy" Im selling one of my dragons to for $250 shipped. I took a $50 non refundable deposit with the agreement that the rest be paid in full within 14 days, ok so the guy had a few issues and set backs taking him 6+ weeks to finish payments(so Im really cool about it) and she has now grown from 200-210grams to 250+ grams since taking a deposit. I was supposed to ship her out yesterday and while I was gathering my shipping supplies I realize Im down to my last heat pack and it somehow got activated in the package, so I e-mail and notify him right away (@ 4:03 pm) and let him know the situation and I get an e-mail back @ 3:43am stating to ship with no heat packs it's plenty warm he doesn't want a heat pack(I picked some 40hr pack up last night so I do have them now), now the high in my area is 86 degrees today, I package my animals late in the afternoon around 5pm and drop by 6pm so temps are usually starting to drop and his high is 68 and lows Im seeing 58-62 depending and I feel that is just a bit to cool for beardies, what do you think? Would you send your dragon with no heat pack per request of the customer? I do not feel I can guarantee live arrival if I do. I have shipped out around 15 dragons in the past 3-4 weeks all with heat packs all across the country with no problems and my dragons arrived thriving. Just wanted to get some other peoples opinions.

I agree with Tom,

Just make sure the box is lined with the styrofoam as a temp buffer and that should do well.
 
Absolutely no heat pack....a dragon can endure 50 degrees for a short time on a trip before it could endure a hot truck temp.[ remember.it's much hotter in the truck ] A heat pack would probably kill it.

If the highs in your area outdoors are in the mid 80s than the highs inside a ups/fedex truck would be in the high 90s. Add a heat pack to that and you turn the box into a little oven. A heat pack is definitely not needed and possibly detrimental in this case.
 
Thanks for the replys everyone, I understand about my temps but the dragon will be dropped off at the UPS hub around 6pm and the woman who manages that location keeps my *Live Harmless Reptile* packages up front in the climate controlled portion until going out on a truck around 8pm. The thing that worries me is the overnight temps in his area being 58 degrees. My dragons never see temps that low usually overnight drops in temp in my dragon room are 72 for the low and even in brumation they rarely see temps below 65. The way I do it is wrap my heat pack in newpaper and then tape to the inside of the top and with this method even in direct sunlight in my back yard on a 90 degree day the interior temps never went above 103.7 degrees and this is just one of many tests I have done on my own to see package temps prior to me ever shipping reptiles so thats where my concern is.

I can understand your concern...and you will end up doing what you feel is best. But I can tell you that all winter long,the dragons [ including babies ] in my basement go down to about 62 degrees at night with no ill effects. Not one respiratory infection. The other thing to consider is that at 86 degrees,the truck will be hotter than the 90's inside. Probably over 100....and IF there was a delay in delivery the next a.m.,your 40 hour heat pack could be the thing that tips the tolerable temp. over to intolerable. I personally hate shipping...and worry with each one. It's your call,but I'm sure...that it will be fine w/out a heat pack.
