In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Shrillomn, a brief expose

If you want to get down to brass tacks, it is thought that Jesus was born in the spring and the movement of his "birthday" to dec 25 was so that it closely coincided with Winter Solstice.

And it's not like it's a world wide thing either, there are just a few billion that don't celebrate it at all, whether they are our enemies or not.

Ah, yes..... nothing like blaming the vehicle for the accident......
Touchy touchy Rich, it was just a thought, shared by more than one apparently, but a thought none the less.

What do you think would happen if there were no rating system at all? Would the site be better?

10 percent will think it is better, 10 percent will think it is worse, and the other 80 percent won't care either way. :shrug01:

If no one askes, no one knows. If no one knows, some ASSume. I'm not much for ASSumptions.

So I ask.

Then I know.

dont want to upset the powers that be with my tonic and gin soaked thoughts. :)

Yes, but more accurately if was situated there due to the pre-existing celebrations associated with the winter solstice, as it was recognized by the masses that the days were now once again getting longer, and not still progressing towards an ever increasing darkness. Spared once again, it was cause for celebration.

Rich, I think your 10-80-10 assumption is based on past results here, and is a highly educated opinion. Them's the facts.

66. Tonic and gin have been the catalysts for some of the most creative dialogues in literary history. Grabbed a few of the best marketing ideas too. Do you have any idea how many of the Fortune 500 companies started as business plans on bar napkins ? Beer grabbed the rest :)

Then please yourself.

I don't believe that goal is attainable here. I am no longer that naive.

What WOULD please you?

Anything I can envision doing here will likely never really PLEASE me. Actually, I can't remember the last time I felt PLEASED about anything here...... And more than likely during that time, whenever it may be, it was just another bout of myopic naivete anyway... :shrug01:

That makes me sad, Rich. None of us here are perfect and I know I'm not. But I love your site and I respect you. I know you have put years of your life into building and maintaining Fauna.

Is there anything we can do to help you regain the joy and pleasure you once had in dealing with the site? I can't say that I could be perfect all the time because I'm not and no one is, but I'm willing to try better to make Fauna a better place.

You have over a thousand people a day who visit here, a site that you created. That in itself is something to be proud of.

Does your not understanding, or mine, or anyone elses mean that there was only one way to interpret those little letters lined up so neatly on the screen?
Nope, and I never claimed that. Your claim was that an inherent drawback to anonymous posting is that no one knows what you mean, and that it somehow reduces the comprehensibility of your posting. I STILL don’t see the logic in this. To be blunt, it sounded as if you were saying that without the benefit of prejudice, you could not interpret a post with any accuracy.

And for some dean, neither distance nor form of interaction make any difference to what is said. To some it is all the difference in the world.
Count me among the former, Wes. But I still think it’s hyperbolic to apply words such as “courageous” and “cowardly” to discussion board antics. I can’t remember the last time I saw a truly “brave” act on Fauna.

Then you're not looking. Take a look at the Mile High thread on the BOI or the thread about Laura Fopiano. Both got put into very bad situations and instead of running, they took it head on. It takes a great deal of bravery to do such an act especially in the public eye.

I don't live on Fauna, so I don't have instant recall concerning Laura or her history. And though I'm familiar with the Mile High thread, the details are murky in my memory. You're probably right, and I haven't looked hard enough for examples of bravery here. However, "bravery" is an abused word, and its application can be subjective. Maybe I just can't remember seeing anything that fit my definition. It's like when a Hollywood actor is praised for making a "brave" choice by deciding to play a mentally handicapped character, or by choosing an obscure role in an indie film. It doesn't fit my definition of the word. :shrug01:

(BTW, I'm not equating Laura's accomplishments with those of a Hollywood actor.)

Understood. It's easy to get lost in all of the babble, threats, accusations and utter non-sense that can occur on this board. However, there are countless "good guys" that are here, many of which have the courage to go against the popular concensus. Several of whom have put their entire collections down for the good of the hobby. The term bravery certainly is subjective but sometimes you have to look through the bad to see the good.

dean, just because you, or I, cannot see a thing, does not mean it isn't there. If you wish only to judge a character by the posts associated with it, that is fine and dandy.

I, however, like some additional meat if it's available. Knowing who someone is, knowing how they've acted in other circumstances, having others relay their dealings with said person, all contribute to the meat that is absent in annonymous posts.

Also, unlike you, most likely, I do have people gunning for me. I've had death threats, my address and phone number posted, numerous hangups, promises of "friends" coming to meet me which I DO say is pure cowadice. I have had these fun things tossed my way because I've been instrumental in outing some pretty foul characters, which is in no way my doing alone or brave at all, it's just something I like to do. Given my situation, I like to know who's poking me with a stick, to know if there's a PERSONAL backstory there, to know if it's one of the dumbasses I've handed their own ass to or just someone else looking for a good time.

You are entitled to your opinion but just because you are, it in no way makes mine any less valid.
