Perhaps you aren't looking at this from my perspective. I make the decisions here on how this site IS, so anyone bashing the results of my decisions is also bashing me because what you see here is the result of my decisions on how to run it, or allow it to be by deliberate inaction on my part.

It's not like you are complaining to middle management about a company and they just shrug it off saying that they are just following orders. You are talking to the guy who makes those orders. That's a WHOLE different situation.

In other words, if someone looks at your child and says the child is ugly and stupid, it's YOUR genes involved in making the child look and act the way it is. And you are telling me you wouldn't get offended at that if it were YOUR child?

In my case, I am telling you that I tried the plastic surgery and mental enhancements on this site and they did not help reach the nirvana that some people think is attainable. It just cost me a lot of time, money, effort, and aggravation trying to reach that goal, which in my opinion, was all wasted. And now people are blaming me because I have decided to stop wasting all of the above on this site.

So I am letting the site be whatever it is based on what the people here make it. So ugly and stupid is as ugly and stupid does here. That's your choice to make. I am not interested in trying to make this site, and by association those people to whom the label applies, less ugly and less stupid looking through my own efforts. As far as the outside world is concerned YOU are what YOU post here. If you want to make yourself look like a fool, I am not going to stand in your way with a bunch of rules and guidelines, or clean up your mess afterwards.

Rich. Herein lies the rub for me. (See bold) The implication may be that you are stuck with the image portrayed by those most persistent in their arguments or attacks, however wrong they are. Beyond just allowing folks an opportunity to display who they are, by your own analogy above, you seem to be willing to allow your character to be reflected in the conduct of this group as a whole. Without ignoring the enormity of the task of maintaining some semblance of control, are you really willing for others (many of whom may be the antithesis of what you represent), to define this facet of your character?

Exactly who would you be referring to as the "the worst stereo types of the herp comunity"??? According to your join date Monte, you were here when the dirty dozen were around, and you should remember how hostile the BOI was in comparison today.

The BOI is a place that was meant for people to criticize others who handed them a raw deal. I think that one can describe a bad business deal without being abusive, however.
There is a way this can be done without the current nastiness, and I certainly think that allowing people to point that out is a way to make this home better.

You're right - I was here during some of ding-a-ling posts - but they were policed and taken care of. I remember distinctlly that the BOI was started because of Rich's experience and the FACT that there are a lot of creeps in this business/hobby.

In my recollection - it got a lot better as the creeps were exposed - but now it seems to be spinning away again.

And as far as criticism goes - I paid my dues - I've always supported Rich - I think I'm entitled. Just because you seem to like it doesn't mean I have to.

Instead of responding to them like an adult considering another point of view, we get to have ringside seats at your latest explosion of petulance. Gee....what a surprise.

This site can take a giant step towards being the sort of resource it could be once the need for petty outbursts like the one quoted above are the exception rather than the norm.

I really think that Rich has made it pretty clear as to how things will be done around here....and exactly why I have said "lead by example" Am I happy about the way some folks behave on the BOI? Heavens no! I joined "Hell so if I really felt that I needed to be a potty mouth, I could do so there.

I find no need to argue with other fauna members on the BOI, and find it counter productive. I can agree to disagree and will usually stop posting on a given thread that has truly warn out it's welcome. The TSE thread is a good example of that and so is the Allen Belcher thread.

In closing, I agree with everything that has been said here in this thread, but, the bottom line is, it's Rich's site and all of us have to live with his rules. I can disagree with under moderation or overmoderation, but Rich is the boss here and I respect him for all that he has done.

Well it proved to be too much work, not enough pay, made me the target of untold numbers of hate emails and PMs, and in the end proved to be detrimental to the BOI in general by not allowing people's TRUE personality show through.

I caught an incredible amount of antagonism and abuse from people who felt they had a RIGHT to post derogatory and abusive messages on this site. I have been belittled and maligned for requiring paid members only to have the ability to post on the BOI in order to filter out most (if not all) of the false registrations that plagued it before and after, in an effort to make it more credible. And quite frankly the pittance I received did help pay for some of the effort I had to expend in order to do the cleanup, if not in the amount, but the gestures made by the people paying the fee. I saw plain and obvious signs that traffic was declining because of people just flat out refusing to pay the minimum $10 in order to help fund the effort required to do what I felt was needed to be done. When I noted the number of people declining to renew their paid memberships, it was a clear signal to me, that the value of the BOI to them, as I was trying to make it in my cleanup efforts, was not quite the price I had set.

I can't say you are all getting what you want here, but you ARE getting what your (in a broad general sense, no one in particular) actions have indicated you asked for. Yes, I am not happy with the way the BOI has become at all, and I know it could be "better". But from the results of the required paid memberships and the flak I caught because of it, the effort needed to reach that goal is not worth the pain it would take (on my part, for free) to get there.

I have learned my lesson, and I can see absolutely no reason whatsoever to repeat that attempt again.

Again, this is not directed at any one person. This is the result of a balance sheet of factors covering every aspect of this site and the conclusions I had to come to based on those factors.
