Hello All, It has been a while. As some of you may know one of my focuses of interest in Herpetology is the genus Tiliqua (Blue Tongue Skinks), and while I have not been involved in any breeding projects for the last few years, I recently started working with Blue-tongues once again (only on a much smaller scale). Anyway, I occasionally check out listings here and on other websites. I came across one classified ad in the Skink section on Kingsnake that caused me some concern. It was posted on Friday 6-3-2011 by Underground Reptiles in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The listing was titled “Beautiful Eastern Blue Tongue Skinks! (Tiliqua S. Scincoides) 20 to 24 inches! Only $100!” See the screen shot below:
The problem with the listing is that these are not Eastern Blue-tongued Skinks (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides), but rather the undescribed Irian Jaya BTS (Tiliqua ssp.) which is imported here in huge numbers along with the Indonesian BTS (Tiliqua gigas). Unfortunately, the problem here does not seem to just a simple misidentification. However, it does seem to be a very convenient coincidence that the Eastern Blue-tongue (Tiliqua s. scincoides) is now a very rare and somewhat expensive find here in the USA. The only Australian BTS form that is available here in any significant numbers would be the Northern BTS (Tiliqua Scincoides intermedia). That being said, there are currently no Tiliqua scincoides forms available on KS, and all of the listings that KS has up at this time are for the two main imported Tiliqua BTS forms: the Irian Jaya BTS (Tiliqua ssp.) and the Indonesian BTS (Tiliqua gigas). Don’t get me wrong, The Eastern BTS is here in the US, and I know at least one breeder working with them, but they are very uncommon, and you generally need to be on a waiting list for babies. And then if you get any, they are always much more expensive.
I decided to give the seller the benefit of the doubt, and I sent them this reply that same day (Friday 6-3-2011) through the Kingsnake messaging system:
“Hello, I thought I should let you know that these skinks are not Eastern Blue Tongue Skinks (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides), but rather are the type from New Guinea referred to as the Irian Jaya Blue Tongue Skink (Tiliqua ssp.), and should also not be confused with the Indonesian BTS (Tiliqua gigas). The Irian Jaya BTS is currently not formerly described, and is not likely to be anytime in the future for reasons I can explain to you if you are interested. And if you are interested in any other information on this form, I would be happy to send you some. Anyway, I thought it would definitely be in your best interest (and that of your customers as well), to be made aware of this error. Thank you, James Wilson”
Unfortunately, they have chosen not to respond, which leads me to believe that they are either aware of the deception, or they just do not care. Neither one seems very good in my book. I guess it is possible that they just have not checked their email to seen my response, but who puts up a listing and then does not bother to check the responses for the first 2 days of the listing? It definitely seems a little odd at best.
I am still happy to explain any taxonomy in regard to the subject to the folks at Underground Reptiles or anyone else that has any questions.
