Ugh, I had so freaking hoped to never have to make a post even remotely like this on this site ...

First of all I want to start by stating that this is not, inherently, an accusatory post. I'm still a little bit on the fence about what I think is going on here -- hence the title of the thread.

Long story short, I bought a ball python (albino) from a gentleman named Greg Wark in Pennsylvania about two months ago. At the time I bought the snake I was living in upstate NY. When I first contacted him I thought I might want to drive down to pick it up, but at the time gas was $4.30/gallon so I elected to have it shipped instead (still kicking myself over that, obviously...). He almost shipped it the week before we moved but didn't get ahold of me in time, so he agreed to hold the snake until we had moved out to MA.

It took me about two months after that to get him to agree to ship the snake; I do believe that he was genuinely busy, but it was still fairly frustrating. We finally agreed that he would ship this past Tuesday for Wednesday delivery. Tuesday afternoon he sent an email with the FedEx tracking number. On Wednesday morning I waited around for the snake, but no show. I tried the tracking number but it didn't work -- was not valid. I contacted Greg and he said that the tracking number wasn't working for him either. During this time, in fact for most of this ordeal, he was and has been fairly prompt responding to emails, and has not chosen to break contact with me at all.

I called FedEx Thursday morning, and the woman on the phone told me that there was not only no record of that tracking number, but no record of my address whatsoever. I told this to Greg and he agreed to go to the FedEx facility to see what was up. He emailed back that evening saying that FedEx claimed that the package was received at my residence. This didn't make a lick of sense to me given that they had told me that there was no record of my address in the system, but I called FedEx again and they still told me the same thing. This time the guy searched even just by my name and still found nothing.

The FedEx guy told me to find out the exact location where he dropped it off, but Greg claims that he can't remember which one it was. He says that it was in Philadelphia near the airport. The ZIP code on the receipt appears to be a Reading ZIP code, though, so I don't know what's going on there.

At this point I'm not sure what to think, though whatever it is, it isn't good. I know if I had actually shipped somebody a live snake, and they claimed never to have received it, and the tracking number wasn't working, I'd be pretty darned upset and I'd be doing everything in my power to try and figure out what the heck went wrong. I know not everyone is as verbose as I am, but I feel like I'm getting some pretty evasive emails back (I'll post them below). I have a hard time reconciling what FedEx is telling me with what Greg is telling me. At the same time, it seems like a lot to go through to rip somebody off -- but then what do I know.

I'm just wondering, from the Fauna crew, if this kind of FedEx screwup has ever happened to anyone else before. Maybe I'm being overly paranoid in thinking that Greg has done something wrong. FedEx is a big company; I don't have any difficulty envisioning them screwing something up somewhere.

Thoughts, questions, comments? I'm not trying to be accusatory here, but I am pretty freaking frustrated.

I'll post some email correspondence below.

I've had very few problems with Fed-Ex, but they've always been able to find what was being shipped. Even with a wrong address/tracking number, or the two combined. I've never been in the situation where they 100% couldn't find it. Who knows?

E-Mail Correspondence

I'll omit all the stuff before shipping because it isn't terribly relevant, and start with the email he sent me the day he shipped the snake.

Hi Greg,

The tracking number isn't working for me on any of the carriers' websites -- I'm just wondering if you had him shipped by 10:30 AM delivery or 2 PM delivery so I know when about to expect him ...

Thanks!!

Could you send the tracking number again (the first one didn't seem to work)? What carrier did you use?

Thanks!!

Hi Greg,

The tracking number isn't working for some reason ... :( Are you able to track it on your end?

Sometimes they are late, I know; I'm just hoping that he gets here before 3 as I have to leave here at 3 PM...

Hi Greg,

Did you send him "signature required?" I'm just wondering if it's OK for me to leave the house, or if that will result in him getting sent back to the FedEx building which would be really bad right now :( It frustrates me that they can't just deliver their packages on time like they say they will! This is not the first time this has happened to me...

I'm sorry they didn't give me a phone number, it was sent indirect signature that way it will be left at your house or your neighbors house.

*For some reason my email to him here isn't attached to his reply, but basically, at this point it was Wednesday night, the package hadn't arrived, and I had said that I would want a refund because I had no proof that he had even sent the package, given that the tracking number was a dud. He sent back this email along with an attachment of a photograph of the airbill, which I will attach to this message (our addresses and my phone number are blurred out for privacy).

I'm sorry the package has not arrived, not every tracking number works. Most likely it was entered incorrectly. At this point a refund is not warrented. I told you in one of the very first emails that it was risky shipping live reptiles via mail due to it being against the policy of nearly all carriers. Secondly I offered you insurance on the package and you declined. Finally I could not refund the entire 400 due to shipping costs which I myself cannot recoup. Again I am sorry that all of this is occurring I'm sure it will all work out and the package will be delivered early in the Morning.

Hi Greg,

I contacted FedEx and they told me that there is no record of the package in their system whatsoever. I don't really know how that works since you have an invoice, and it looks to me as though you would have had to ship it, but she is telling me that there is no record of the shipment whatsoever and her recommendation was to contact the seller.

Please, please, please, if there is anything you can do on your end, help me out. I don't expect a refund because it looks to me as though you shipped the snake, but since FedEx seems to think that you didn't, is there any way you can go back to the location you shipped him from and just see what the hell is up? Maybe the retard behind the counter stole the package, I don't know, but at this point I have no money, no snake and no way to find him -- I don't know where on earth he is at this point, but it looks like it isn't Massachusetts, not even at a neighbor's house.

Maybe if you went back to FedEx and spoke to the same representative, she might remember you and be able to tell you what went wrong..?? It just looks at this point as though there's no way I'm ever going to recieve this package because my address is not even in their system whatsoever.

Thanks

Kitt

Hi Greg,

What info did you give the counterwoman that allowed her to find the tracking info that told them that it was dropped off here? When I contact them they're still telling me that my address isn't even in their system, so I'm at a loss where they think it's delivered ... It seems like they somehow got the wrong address + wrong tracking number..?

Thanks

Hi Greg,

What is the exact FedEx location that you took it to? When I called FedEx on the phone that is what he asked me.

I can only see half of the receipt, and parts of it are blacked out, so I can't tell where you took it.

The receipt you showed me doesn't mean much, as the tracking number doesn't work and my address is not in the system whatsoever, suggesting that FedEx does not actually have the package. However, it's possible that maybe they entered my address wrong -- in which case I need to know which location you shipped him from so that they can check the records to see where it might have gone to.

Otherwise, the snake, if he is indeed in the box, is going to die.

Kitt

*At this point I waited until Friday afternoon before getting a response; right before I got the below email I sent him an email in which I mentioned that I might post the situation on the Board of Inquiry. He didn't reply directly to that email which is why I don't have it here.

OK, thanks.

I wrote the last email before I got this one. I'm going to call FedEx and see if they can figure out what the hell happened. They do have cameras, so if someone stole the package they should be able to see it.

There are about ten FedEx locations in Philadelphia. I need to know the EXACT one so that the FedEx rep on the phone can check in with them and see what might have gone down.

Hi Greg,

I didn't see any FedEx's in Philly on the map that were terribly near the airport -- at least one didn't stand out as being closer than the others -- what confuses me though is that the ZIP code on the reciept in the photograph is a ZIP code for Reading PA, not Philadelphia.

So did you go to a FedEx in Reading? Or is that reciept for something else?

I believe that to be from my account information

... That's all I have so far. I am going to email Greg and inform him of this thread, though I don't know really what he's going to say -- I'm not precisely accusing him of anything, I just want to know if this FedEx thing is even plausible. Greg has been very polite throughout all of this, and I don't at all relish confrontation and would like to keep things civil. So there you have it.

Sorry the email stuff is so hard to read; seems to be protocol to keep those silly header things in there.

AirBill

Boy, that was long, sorry. One more thing: Here is the copy of the airbill that Greg emailed me, with our addresses blurred out for privacy.

I'm going to email Greg to inform him of this thread, but probably won't check back until the morning ... Thanks to all who read this and can offer opinions.

Fedex has nothing to gain by lying to you. You said they did several kinds of searches including the tracking number. If Fedex said your information doesn't exist then I would believe Fedex. So in my opinion you were ripped off. I hope you can get your money back or get your snake. Good luck.

Brian Dierking

I started my post before you posted the Airbill. Anyone can walk into a Fedex location and grab a stack of airbills and leave with them. This is my opinion, but I say that airbill is bogus. Anyone can fill one out to say any name or address they want and make a claim to the customer that they sent it. If Fedex has no information on that tracking number then it was never given to them to ship. I believe Fedex.

Brian Dierking

I can go to Fed Ex and get airbills to fill out all day long. I can fill in all the pertinent blanks and e-mail you pics of it too. Doesn't mean I ever sent anything.

If shipping was included in the price then you are due the entire $400 if the package never shows or if it does , the animal is dead. I get red flag vibes off the pic of the airbill. All the handwriting looks the same , including what Fed Ex would've filled out.

I'm smelling " You got screwed " all over this. Any carrier can loose a package but if the hub he shipped from has you in the system then the customer service desk your calling would have the same info.

There are little things in his e-mails that raise those red flags too. I get the impression he is willing to leave you hanging on your own to find a box that doesn't seem to have been shipped. The insurance wouldn't have mattered anyway since Fed Ex doesn't cover live animal shipments. I believe that is stated in the shipping contract folks get from Fed Ex. If the box doesn't show your due a full refund , not X amount minus shipping.

He owes you a snake or a refund. That tracking number and any package that was associated with it was never delivered or even put into Fed Exs system in the first place. Not at the place of origin, not at any hub it was at along the way, not at your local facility for being out for delivery and not as delivered. ALL of those scans would appear in Fed Ex's tracking system. If the guy is saying that it was delivered he is flat out lying.

First -- skip trying to track the airbill info -- it could easily be bogus (and most likely is) -- take the information on the receipt -- and contact the facility it was shipped from -- even if it doesn't include the package # just by looking at the date and time of the shipment they should be able to pull up which packages were cued into their system at that time and if any went to your address.

Secondly -- irregardless of whether or not he has a receipt unless he's got proof that it was delivered to you he still owes you a snake - plain and simple.

Good luck.

Is that the exact pic he sent? With the other side of the receipt cropped out or did you crop it more for your post?

If that is the exact pic he sent and the receipt is supposed to show the shipping charges then I think it was cropped for a reason. Request a pic of the full receipt.

I'm looking at one here in front of me and the cropping is cutting out where the tracking number is. I'd be very interested to know if the tracking number on that receipt matches the airbill.

Bingo Bryon!! I did not even notice the receipt in that pic until your post made me go look at it again. Touche'!!

The zip code on the receipt is for Reading (not Philadelphia) and is not in any way related to his account. That is the zip code to the FedEx station the receipt was printed at...So he obviously lied about that.

At this point a refund is not warrented. I told you in one of the very first emails that it was risky shipping live reptiles via mail due to it being against the policy of nearly all carriers. Secondly I offered you insurance on the package and you declined.

This here is a big red flag to me...

1) He didn't deliver what was paid for, so you are entitled to a refund.
2) Couriers do allow shipping of Live Harmless Reptiles if you have an account to do so...So if he violated their TOS by not having the appropriate account, that's his fault.
3) None of the couriers will refund for DOA animals, especially if their is no record of the shipment.

If you paid

by credit card or Paypal, contact them immediately. It would be to ironic for FedEx not to have any entry if it was accepted.

This does not make sense. I think this guy is lying. I have been using Fed Ex for about 3 years and have never had anything like this happen. I would suggest that you take immediate action, like others have have voiced. Hope things work out for the best

Michael

Me thinks Mr. Wark needs to be informed of this thread so he can tell us all how quickly he is going to refund all your money. He be smellin a mite bad at this point.

my money is on Wark being a COMPLETE FRAUD.

File a credit card or Papal dispute right away. This guy probably has the money spent.

I came up with a quote of $46.18 to ship that package fed-ex priority overnight. I agree with everyone this guy if full of it, reverse the charges or file a PayPal dispute ASAP!

How can you not remember which facility you took the package to? I could see if it had been years since it was shipped but come on.. Hey have him ask his friend which one it was, yeah right.

It sure looks like you've been scammed here. yeah it's possible that the tracking number doesn't work , I've had that happen before. But having a bogus tracking number and no box showing up at your door that screams no box was ever sent.. The police are very unlikely to do anything but you might contact your local PD and file a complaint, they should forward it to his local PD. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll have an officer drop by to talk to him, that has worked in the past to get things straightened out.. Hope this works out for ya..Randy
