In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Inquiry - Jeff Schofield?

Nothing pushy here, you could have emailed his customer to get an idea of what he was selling.
Who uses references of that sort? Most of the time it's a friend or relative. Unless it's someone I personally know those kinds of references are useless.

In this day and age, I won't even buy a $25 corn snake sight unseen (photo or physically), and this guy wants people to buy VARIABLE kingsnakes sight unseen. I personally find it laughable too. I probably wouldn't have called him a scammer that quick, but truth be told "I don't have a camera", "I don't want to waste my time with photos" "if I had photos, I could sell them for twice as much, but it's not worth the trouble" (oh brother, on that last one) are all typical scam lines.

Hence the "could have" part :dgrin: . I don't see anything wrong with contacting a seller's other customers, although it would usually be for a reference and not for pictures. I 'm not gonna disagree with rb tho; not having pictures of ANY animals let alone variable (McFly, Hello!!!) kingsnakes.

Brad, no change, you seemed a real good guy via pm, and my opinion of you hasnt changed, but i certainly don't know you, nor you me. The internet is such a worthless means of communication; there is no "feel" for a person like you get in face to face. It was just my opinion on your actions with Mr. Schofield I expressed, and we know what opinions are like :hehe:

darn enter button....meant to finish that sentence...."is not going to help sell them, and not too many people buy ANY animal "sight unseen "

Thanks for simplifying it John, I started feeling bad there for a second. As simple as the communication was, it just wasn't right for the reasons you mentioned. Everything he said from the onset pointed to a likely scam. Everyone keep in mind what I said in the very first post here, this guy might be a nice guy with some real nice thayeri, I couldn't possibly know. All I know is what he communicated to me and how I took it. Wrong or right, I still believe him to be, at the very least, missleading and pushy (this, in turn, leads to the label). It seems to me that the BOI is here to notify other buyers of possible issues with sellers and vise versa. I would hate to see someone get nailed by any questionable sellers. Regardless of what some of the posters here think, I honestly hope I have helped someone. And, I too have learned something from this as well.

I want to also note that I am not the only one that has picked up on this behavier by Mr. Schofield. As it turns out, there have been others that have not only dealt with his odd behavior, but have also been burned by him in various ways, some are mentioned right here on the BOI. Is this the kind of guy that you want to defend? In doing my best to be unbiased, I will also note that there are some people that have had pleasent dealings with him as well. So, who knows, you may get what you ask for with a smile, or you may not. If a buyer likes taking chances, than be my guest. Otherwise, take a hard look at what is here on the BOI and make your decision wisely.

I think the BOI is a tremendous asset to the herp community and I'm glad I found out about it (thanks to Mr. Schofield who told me to check him out here). I will be checking in with it prior to doing business with unknowns in the future. Maybe I can have more insight by checking here, prior to labeling someone a scam, private or otherwise.

Brad

Don't feel bad Brad.

How can anyone expect to sell something like that without pictures? Here is an example:

I have for sale here the nicest new form of corn snakes ever created. They are bright purple with neon orange saddles, some of them have grass green stripes running lenghtwise down their sides from head to tail. Now these are guaranteed to be the most colorful corn, but you have to take my word for it, I don't have any pictures. I'm only asking $2,000.00 each, but if I had pics I could probably get $5,000.00. I sold one last week to a guy in Oz and he really liked it, go ahead and e-mail him. I've sold millions of snakes, all to happy customers. Don't trust me? Well go take a flying leap!

I would also point out that Brad did label this thread as an "inquiry" and not as a "bad guy" thread. The tone of the thread actually came from others input on Mr. Schofield. While I agree that Brad's response and continued baiting may have been uncalled for, Mr. Schofield is the one who really came off as a weenie in this exchange

This is amusing...Jeff has apparently decided to re-word his ad

Still paying room and board for these girls. Included are:
0.2 Adult buckskin phase thayeri.NICE group, very interesting buckskins...lots of gray.VERY CLEAN.NOT average animals, priced as hi end thayeri.............$200ea or shipped for $380/pr--NOTE--these would have been sold a long time ago if I had pics, one sold to a VERY happy customer just last week, reference.
0.1 Adult Pale milk,Sheridan,NE locale,Brian Mason stock--$240
0.1 Adult Central Plains milk,Brian's stock--$95

There are some pics available(milks) but the animals arent at my location for more....These are hard to find specimens and females would add value to any breeding group! One loser has mentioned that I must be scamming people if I dont have pics. Please note that I wont sell to someone who wants to complain before seeing the snakes. I suggest to others to not sell to problem customers too, it only softens the market.Jeff

That is a bit over the top in my opinion.

I'm still taking orders

on my new PURPLE AVENGER Corns, just send money, Trust me you'll be happy with the crap I send, and if your not, stop being a complainer.

Thanks John for bringing that ad to our attention. He obviously skipped "ad writing 101". On a side note though, he says that the snakes are 2 hours away. Is he the one who takes care of them or someone else does? If someone can't take pictures because he is 2 hours away, how does he cares for them?

Regards.

You know....if he REALLY wanted to sell them, he could buy a disposable camera for a couple bucks, and pay a couple bucks more at WalMart to have the pics put onto a disk. That is, if he had the snakes to take pictures of, anyway.

And wow, that re-worded ad would inspire me to buy his snakes sight-unseen. Not. Childish name-calling right in his ad, gee, that's a really good way to gain respect.

I was thinking the exact same thing. As for his new ad it does not matter how he words I guess, because according to Mr. Schofield he is 1 of the eldest & most respected names in the herp world. So I guess his animals will sell, because is rep. right Jeff? :raspberry

I catch up with this damn soap opera on page 7??

To defend myself at this point in my career seems a bit much but I will re-hash my past for you newbies and those who didn't hear it right the first time.
I started breeding milks back around 1990 and was a good customer and student of Chuck the snake man of MD. I met him while I was working on the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey in Washington,DC after graduating UMASS with 2 degrees in Biology. I moved back to Mass and worked for National Marine Fisheries Service out of Woods Hole,MA doing both recreational and commercial fisheries research for 10+ years.
During this time I was concentrating on east coast lampropeltis, mostly chain kings, mole kings, eastern milks and coastal plains milks. I have hunted with or spent time with every coastal plains nut east of the Mississippi. At my peak I was producing over 150 baby coastals a year, but that was before I discovered kingsnake.com.
Biology is not a career to make $$ in, so I took a few side jobs and worked my way into sales and marketing. I worked in almost every state on the east coast and was constantly traveling. Sometimes I would have my snakes, sometimes I would have someone watch them while I was away.It was one of these times I returned from being scammed on the road out of $10K to find that Joe Carroll Hughes stole my whole collection valued in the area of $15K.. Every time I hear SCAM artist I think of him.How about losing $25K in one summer??How about finding your snakes raised from babies on a table for sale in Daytona?? It happened.
I had to start over again in collecting specimens and buying/trading for good stock. I had to call in IOUs from guys who owed me stuff, some came through and some didnt. There are still about 5-6 guys out there who owe me stuff--REAL SCAM ARTISTS. They didn't make a mistake in IDing, they didn't make a mistake in shipping, they ripped me off and I didn't post a bad word on every one of them.I dont owe anyone a dime in this or any world, its how I sleep at nite. But that is me.I have had some unhappy customers in the past as everyone has. Out of hundreds of customers, easily over 1000 snakes sold,to have 3 guys that dont like me is acceptable. It doesn't mean I like it.
I currently have a smoking hot, completely crazy girlfriend in Bosnia which also complicates my life. Twice this year I have left to go to extended trips to visit her. Each time having to move everything I own including snakes. I dont feel I have to explain my moves to everyone but here it all is. My problems posting pics is now legendary. That problem is compounded by losing 2 computers this year and one camera....and all the pics in them. I simply am unorganized and dont know what is still in there, where it is etc....but hey, that's me. Sorry.
I currently am paying a buddy to watch my snakes. This is not a good business decision on my part so I would rather just sell them off for less than they are worth to avoid this expense. He is over 2 hours away, has no camera, and is deaf so he is unable to be reached by phone. All these things I am repeating now I have mentioned before if any of my detractors were interested to learn, but I suggest they aren't. We are creating a faultless society and those who have come into the arena of snake breeding in the past 10 years bear no scars. Most get great deals from some breeders and EXPECT it with others. Its this type of customer that 10 years ago would try and get a $10 corn for $5, this is why I got out of regular(read low end)colubrids in the first place.
This is America, home of the free and land of the brave. If I produce, sell, trade or give away my snakes it will be my decision as to what, who and how its done. If you want a pic I dont have and cant get one,go to the next vendor who does. Dont harass me and call me a SCAM artist ,idiot, liar or whatever other bad word for offering my hard work to you at a bargain. If I make a mistake in shipping I will own up to it. It has happened more than once.Twice this year alone I have lost major shipments with DHL....shipper error. If I make a trade with someone I will do what I think appropriate to make good. But,as angry posters continue to show, some people you just can't make happy.
This is no cut at anyone else in the HOBBY, but I produce some very unique animals that keep my interest in the hobby. Many times I will take some things in trade that I know I can turn over later....that I have no interest in keeping in the long run. Many times I have no pics of these, many times I will consider one pueblan or sinaloan as good as the next....not warranting pics. If you choose not to believe me,fine. Most times those that do are pleasantly surprised with snakes of greater value. I have always tried to add throw ins in deals when I have them. But as Mr Scarboro will attest, even this wouldn't keep some people happy.
If you notice my argumentative nature you will notice I always defend the TRUTH. I am not perfect, but I dont lie, change my story, cheat,or misrepresent anything to anyone ever. I challenge each of my detractors to go through the ringer the way I have in this HOBBY and continue to put up with the crap that is this post. Tell me you wouldn't be jaded, sarcastic, or just plain defensive of guys trying their best to glean my best products for the least price....then complaining about it. Dont mind me,I will continue to take a pass on these customers. I just dont need them. I suggest that NONE of us need them.
Maybe I should just go to shows and offer $5 for every little thing I want and get pissed off when people treat me badly. It seems to work for some constant complainers. Its these guys that havent bred yet, that havent been burned yet, that havent earned their stripes that do all the complaining. It is these guys that never last in the hobby anyway(as most older guys can laugh about).
To Shannon,Kathy,Bob,Ted,Rich,Don,Tony,Brian,Terry,Ric and others(you know who you are) thanks for being the best breeders by holding the line and sticking with this as a hobby or a job as times have changed. Sometimes I have no idea how or why you guys do it. I guess I am getting old because I simply dont have the patience to continue to teach others while being flamed for NOT selling. All of you that have read this far have to laugh, this guy is mad at me for NOT selling him snakes, lol. Seriously.
So there it is. If its a lemon to you, grab a tequila shot and suck on it. I am not here trying to impress anyone with my tactics. I know I will be getting back into this more regularly now that I have smoked out Mr Joe Carroll Hughes(who has contacted me and has promised to make good--stay tuned). I suggest that if I have pissed you off in the past and are still pissed after reading this, dont bother with me. But those of you that have been TOLD by one of these guys what a bad guy I am, read this, ask around some more, ask the ELDERLY statesmen of kingsnake.com what kind of man I am. You will be pleasantly surprised how nice I can be when treated with the respect I have earned. Thanks,Jeff

that was a great story.

Jeff, could you please ask the "refrence" the happy customer, That you speak of in your ad on ks.com to come here & tell us how happy he/she was? Or post an email address on them? You went way out into left field with that post :>off_to<: . Point being the way you word your ads and the way you conduct biz. would definilty make me (& im sure im not alone either) take my $ and shop elsewhere. You keep talking about newbies & the elders of the herp scene, is a person a newbie because you have never heard of them?

The email that Brad "didnt get"

Jacob, I went all the way out there so I would not have to continue to follow up. But I can see that you all would like to see the forwarded email I sent to Brad concerning the other female thayeri sent out last week. Anyone familiar with kingsnake.com classifieds has surely seen my ads with and without pics. I have NICE stuff,so when I say something is average or something is NICE I know what I am talking about. All the NEW GUYS can insist on pics and most of the time I can accomidate,I would not buy these without pics myself.
Most of my customers in the past have appreciated this but as you can see from this thread its the same 2-3 guys from that other thread still piling on after they had been handed their hat in the last thread. I mean come on, if I say that the snake in question is caught by Kirk Setser at location X,sold to me as such by Shannon Brown and each of them come forward and recite the same verbatim would you question me? OK,I was a little out of line with that ad,lol, but here is the forwarded email Brad "didnt get".It starts here:

Try this on and apologize anytime,J

***END OF FORWARDED MAIL--Can I ask why every persons age isnt posted? Is it because you are under 18? Just asking.Maybe its the scientist in me,but if you read that long post every single question you may ask is answered there.Jeff

Jeff

While I tend to side with bits and pieces of the diatribe you just posted, let me make two points.

1.) You chose to be involved in the retail end of the business. As it was a voluntary choice, don't bitch about the inevitable pitfalls that are sometimes involved with dealing with retail customers....it is part of the job!

2.) The proper response to an argumentative or belligerent customer at the onset of negotiations is "Thanks for the inquiry" and then you let it go. There is no middle ground

The back and forth sniping crap is suited only for the elementary playground...not for the retail arena.

While I think Brad showed poor form in enabling the back and forth crap, you are supposed to be the professional, not him. Act like one and the respect you seem to feel is your due based on longevity in the hobby might actually materialize.

Jeff may I ask how is anyones age relavant to this thread? I too would kindly walk away from a out of line customer, not bicker back n forth as you did in those emails. Why is it you want to meet Brad in person? Why the mention of you being 6'2 250 lbs or whatever it was? Just curious.

Jeff, I agree that he went too far by immediately labeling you a "scammer", I still think there's something to be said.

You will be pleasantly surprised how nice I can be when treated with the respect I have earned.

Respect is earned only by giving others the same, whether they be "newbies" or oldtimers. While it may be very true you have been in the business a long time, that doesn't mean that you have "earned" enough respect to not have to treat others with respect yet still deserve to get it.

It just seems to me that you should at least try to live up to this great amount of respect that you demand. You were a "newbie" at one time too.

A perfect 10 from the Romanian judge for proper use of DIATRIBE

I have never claimed to be in business, retail or otherwise. My replys went from 4 sentences to 2 to 1 with "Brad, believe me if I had pics they would have been gone a long time ago,Jeff" being the obvious "thanks for your reply". It is this fellow throwing the first punch and determined to throw the last that got me riled. I said this once and I will say it again, none of us need customers like this guy.
And Jacob,to answer your question, again just go look at that last post.It was he who questioned me backing this up in person, and I wont back down to something when it affects my reputation.Age matters because I have been posting ads on kingsnake for years and years. Some have pics, some dont. Note that you have never heard or read a bad thread about a snake sold without a pic that was not up to par with the payment recieved. That speaks for itself doesnt it?
Cathy, when it comes to respect I have earned it. I dont and didnt demand it. But when DISRESPECTED I reacted promptly and with proper restraint. If you read my history it would give most reasonable cause for respect right? Did I not do everything that I could to difuse the situation prior to the disrespect? If so,why are we having this conversation? We still haven't heard exactly who Brad is. I would not be surprised to be dead balls on analysis wise. As I said prior,I studied at the feet of a colubrid genius and asked every question that I could--not once did I get mad for not seeing a picture.J
