In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Jake Terry tricked me

Does anyone have experience disputing a purchase through Paypal or credit card?

I used Paypal, and the payment was from my business credit card.

Unless Jake steps forward, I think my only recourse is to let either Paypal or the credit card company deal with Jake. I kind of doubt that they will give up when Jake's dad gets on the phone and tells them that Jake is too upset to talk.

I know people that have disputed through Paypal, and although it was a lengthy process, was succesful. This really deserves a law suit, though. I know that it is too expensive, but I hate to see the seller get away with this. I just hope that he does not sell any more animals. So incredibly irresponsible. He has no regard for the welfare of this snake.

Thank you so much for updating us on the Butter's condition.

I would dispute it through your credit card.

All a scumbag like Jake Terry or his dad have to do is provide a tracking number to Paypal and they will side with the seller.

At least the cc company will want to play for keeps -- since they could get money back.

Animals fall under Paypals -- we don't guarantee you anything policy. Although if you don't receive anything at all they will refund you if the money is in the sellers account -- aside from that they don't much care if you did not receive what you should have.

Your best recourse is to first file a complaint with Paypal -- on the off chance you get someone on a good day that is willing to put the claim through -- my guess is that the money is not in the account any longer and even if they rule in your favor -- you'll get nothing. As well you should file a complaint with your cc company -- be sure you have all of your supporting information, receipts, pictures, etc. depending on your cc company they may refund you immediately, or it may take some time.

Contracts with a minors are invalid and are generally risky -- you may be up the proverbial creek going after Jake (as I'm assuming he is a minor) and you'll likely have to claim his father is the one that sold you the snake.

Good luck.

Credit card dispute

I talked with my credit card company today.

They will be sending me papers to start the dispute process. Although there is no guarantee, the situation seems hopeful based upon what they said, and my ability to document everything.

I don't know if anybody's seen Jake here today. Maybe he's looking in as a guest.

Jake, are you there?

Still waiting for your vet's report to give to my vet and credit card company.

Looks like Jake is ducking the situation completely.

Looks like Jake is showing that his true colors are those of a scumbag scam artist.

The butter male is being treated with Silvadene, and should recover and live a normal life, with the exception of breeding. Once I get the money part of the deal resolved, I will place the snake in a pet home.

When I get the Vet's report, I will fax that in to VISA. They said it could take a month or so to get the dispute process going, and will assign an agent to the case. I assume that means they will then contact Jake (or his dad) to hear his side of the story, and then probably start using techniques to get the money back.

As I have mentioned, keeping all emails has made it possible for me to make my case.

I will post again when I have more news.

Jake, i really thought better of you. I would have loved to see you fix this, and work something out to where you are both happy, in the end.

Instead, you just ignore this completely. Do you think that it will go away? Even if the chargeback goes through, YOU will still be responsible for your inaction here.

How hard would it be to do that? It might take time, and little bit of work and/or money, but at least then you'd be in the right, and you'd have made your buyer happy as well, and you would have looked like a good guy, that just got a bit caught up in things. It might not have been the best outcome, but you know what, at least you would have shown you tried.

Umm, just a newbies 2 cents. Prolapses happen to any animal, most commonly caused by severe over breeding, due to the male organ swelling and never allowing enough time to pass between breedings for the tissue to drop completely. It is an extremely painful medical problem, as I know most men here are clutching than package and praying that it don't happen to them. Yes, something as simple as sugar helps drop the swelling and allows the package to be replaced in its rightful spot. I think both sides are at fault, one for lack of information which is disgusting for his lack of care, let alone business. But the buyer also for a disregard to the animals quality of life. Any animal I receive, who has any questionable marks, pain, anything, my first call is my vet, and for 35 bucks can tell me at least how serious a problem is, before I even spend any more money. Ya, we all know definitive diagnoses are more expensive, but any vet worth his weight can say, this is looking to be a,b,c,w, we need to do the following test to know for sure. Then I can at least understand what the problem is, and then work from there. At that point contacting the seller, I sure would have done, and your right, if they told me an animal was in pain or dying, I sure as hell would do what was reasonable in the aspect of the animals life and quality. I can fight for my money just as good after, come here and drag their name through the mud, fill with every court I could, the BBB, and spam the internet with every bad rep I could type. Thats my thoughts. Thanks for listening to me ramble.

Letter from credit card

I received a letter from the credit card company regarding my credit dispute against Jake Terry for the butter male. Here is what the letter (dated Aug 28) said:

"Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding the charge(s) totalling $864.55 which appeared on your commercial card statement.

Your business account has been credited for the charge(s). Also, we have contacted the merchant's bank of deposit for further clarification of this matter. If we receive information or documentation verifying that the charge(s) is(are) valid, we will re-bill your business account."

So I assume that Jake or his dad will be contacted soon, if they haven't already been contacted.

The story isn't over until I see the actual credit on my statement, according to the representative I spoke to today. I do not know how long that could take.

Still no contact at all from Jake?

No, Jake has not contacted me. After his last refusal to refund (by email), which was before I started this thread originally, I have not had direct contact with Jake.

I am going to let the credit card collections dept. deal with him.

Thank you for asking, and I will post here when I have more news.

Wow 17 and already screwed up your reputation in the reptile world ! Way to go Jake !!

Who's Jake's dad? Seems that he needs to shoulder a good deal of the responsibility for all of this as well. I can't speak for others but if my kid got into something like this I'd be jumping in to get it straightened out, yet Jake's dad is absent from all this.. Randy

Just sad Jake.

Thought you knew better than this...

Doug, i wish you all the luck in keeping that money. He ran from this, and the chance at resolving this issue long ago. *shakes head*

Some activity

I called the credit card company to see what the status of my dispute with Jake Terry was.

The representative I spoke with looked at notes that had been made regarding the case. They told me that he had presented his side of the story, but apparently his story was not very convincing, as the notes indicated that after hearing Jake's argument, my argument still appeared solid.

However, they told me to call back on Nov 1st to see if the situation has been completely resolved.

Today I tried to make a purchase using Paypal. I was restricted as an automatic process that happens when you dispute a charge for a credit card when you used Paypal as the mode of payment. I saw the message that you should always contact Paypal first. But it went on to say that this restriction would be lifted upon resolution.

The butter male is living with the president of the NWHKA - Northwest Herptile Keeper's Association. She is not a breeder, but a snake lover. I will have her post here if substantiation is required.

My only concern is that the credit card or Paypal might require that the snake be returned to the seller. Perhaps this could be avoided if Jake agrees to let the snake stay in good hands here...

Dude! Nice signature!

Thanks for the update Doug. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

good luck doug and i hope all goes in your favor. and as for jake i wish i could say i feel bad for him being so young and trying to start out on the right age to grow into the reptile industry but after reading all of this i cant say that. hes brung it all on himself. people make mistakes in life and does some things you shouldnt do and cant change them but jake this you could have changed the outcome and showed people you cared and was atleast willing to try to resolve the problem at hand but you didnt you just walked away from it and ignored it and now you have hurt your reputation and will lose out alot because there are alot of people like myself that arent breeders but just small personal collecters and will never buy from you after this. word of mouth goes along ways in the reptile world and most people check the BOI because it gives us the chance to learn and find out how a seller is before they do deals online with others and even though i myself have never bought anything from here yet i intend to and i am working on a transaction at this moment from a seller on here and im about to post up an inquiry on them because i know atleast one person from the boi will either know if they are good or bad. so jake i hope you live up to your end and fix this so that you dont ruin your name over a simple matter that can be fixed. i see mooing thought highly of you before this and that says alot because alot of people on here trust and believe alot that she says and now you have her thinking bad of you as well? bad move.

Good news and bad news

The case is closed according to my credit card, and the money refunded to me is permanent, so I have now not lost the money I sent to Jake. This of course means that Jake has to pay my credit card if he hasn't already done so.

Unfortunately, I can not reinstate my paypal account until I send the snake back to Jake. Paypal requires that a product must be sent back to the seller in order to reinstate service if money was charged back. This policy makes me want to warn others that using Paypal for live animals may not be the most desirable method. The Paypal rep I spoke with suggested that I send the snake, and then if Jake refused it, it would come back to me and then I could get Paypal again. I told her that I am not willing to do something that would risk the snake's health, as a round trip might not be a good thing.

Plus I told her that I am not willing to return the snake to Jake, because the welfare of the snake could be compromised if he does receive him. Or Jake might try to sell him again to another person as a breeder.

Jake, I am challenging you to do the right thing. You can send me an email letting me know that you are not willing to receive the snake, and I can then forward this to Paypal. Or you need to contact your local herp society, and find someone there who is willing to receive this snake from me, and you need to accept this as equivalent to you receiving the snake yourself. I will pay shipping. I will continue to post here and keep this siuation fresh in everybody's minds until you post here or send me an email.

Doug

Mr. Ferrin,
Though I understand your protective nature toward the snake do you really feel that it is ethically correct to get a snake for free from a dealer, even if it can only be a pet?
I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that many people will view this as a form of theft unless authorized by the seller.
