Btw, the journal extends to more then just that one web page. It goes for several months.

Here in Madison it's gonna cost her $10 to $20 for each rack.shrap said:It is all plastic, recycle it. Or you might want to contact who ever pics up your garbage. Every decent sized city I have lived in has a monthly heavy trash pick up day. Where you can set out appliances, beds, couches..... racks, etc for pick up.
April Homich said:Dr Jacobson is not her vet, he's the one in Florida that her vet was in contact with and one of the top researchers in reptile medicine. He has spent over 30 years in this field with a focus on infectious diseases and would have the best resources and background to study this. Why would you not rely on him?
April Homich said:I was not talking about using him as a way to say if stuff was clean or not, I was saying that maybe if there were any chance he'd want the snakes for research, the whole reptile community would benefit. It was said by Dr. Jacobson that it wasn't clear what virus it was, so how would any other vet know what course of action to take if they don't even know what it it. You know he wasn't the one that said bleach was fine, and that wasn't the purpose of my post.
I'm sure the guy gets grant money to pay for his research - he's not going to expect you to pay for it if it also benefits him. You know, his name has been used before by people as an excuse to sell sick animals. Sometimes people only hear what the want to hear and twist words around into what agrees with their reasoning. You can't blame him for maybe even getting upset that this happens. I just hope that there's the small chance that he'd still want any of the animals.

The g-stripe has nothing to do with the virus -- he came from a friend of mine from a forum that I have known for 4 years, on a breeding loan to go with the adult het g-stripe I had gotten from the Sutherlands (that I subsequently lost). He arrived before this virus thing blew up and was luckily one of the unaffected ones. Throughout the last year, I have kept Tommy UTD on everything -- he is well aware of what has happened, where I'm at, etc. I left it up to him to decide what he wanted done with the snake -- I told him that if he chose to take it back, he needs to be sure it isn't kept in the same building as the rest of his snakes. He decided to go ahead with that course of action. He owns the snake, so therefore I have no say in what happens to it. It's a crappy situation all around -- Ihe now has a useless g-stripe that just happened to be here at the wrong time. I really wish it didn't have to involve him.
You guys are right, I wasn't thinking clearly. The racks aren't safe. Tell me what to do with them, and I'll figure out how to get rid of them. I guess that's the risk I took getting into snakes. I'm out almost $15,000 in vet bills and animals, and can't even sell the equipment I have left. I'm about to lose my house, my car, and a lot of other things because of my a-hole ex husband. I thought I could try to earn some money back by selling this stuff now that I have no use for it, but that's a no go now.
And in regard to Dr. Jacobsen, we offered to send him the snakes and/or the bodies once they were euthanized. Neither myself or Dr. Gordon have recieved a response -- and odds are, we won't. Dr. Jacobsen doesn't do things for free -- and I don't have a spare penny to spend on any more vet bills.

Cat_72 said:And take a read through all of the posts in the Bearded Dragon world about Dr. Jacobsen and his research on Adenovirus in Beardies...he flat out said that Beardies with AV should NOT be bred, but the vast majority of Beardie breeders are flat out ignoring his advice. Is there legitimate reason for this? Judge for yourself.

Cat_72 said:April, you obviously have not worked with folks like Dr. Jacobsen before. They don't do ANYTHING for free, which would be a good part of the reason why Jen already has an astonishingly huge vet bill. Jen has been paing and paying for this research, when she could have just said SCREW YOU ALL right from the beginning....and folks are still jumping on her ass about not doing enough. Whether it's simply that they haven't taken the time to actually learn everything she's done and been through, or are blissfully ignorant about how the whole world of research into things like this works, or think that everyone has $15,000 to just throw around to benefit the rest of the herp community, I don't know. And he STILL hasn't responded to her offer to give him the snakes.
Sure, she's made some decisions that I don't agree with, but in the end has done every damn thing she can do to try to help out not only her animals, but the rest of the herp world in general. She has extended her vet search past Dr. Jacobsen when she couldn't even get him to speak to her (BEFORE she put up ads to sell some of the animals), and referred to another couple of reptile specialists, as well as another vet, who perhaps is not a herp specialist, but is affected by the sme damn virus after buying a snake from the same source as where she did. When you can't even get a vet to RESPOND to you, what else do you do? Sit on your ass and watch your animals die, or look for help elsewhere???
And take a read through all of the posts in the Bearded Dragon world about Dr. Jacobsen and his research on Adenovirus in Beardies...he flat out said that Beardies with AV should NOT be bred, but the vast majority of Beardie breeders are flat out ignoring his advice. In Jen's shoes, I don't know if I coul have gone on as long as she has, between the heartbreak it has caused her at home, and the beatings she has received here and other places for it. There's no set precedence for something like this, as far as I know.....does one euthanize all of the animals and give up from the beginning, or keep going on and try to help out the whole herp community at your own expense (which you really can't afford in the first place)? Or just keep it quiet like so many others have done before her, and go on with life as usual? Tough call, huh?
Mooing Tricycle said:Exactly my point. And what ive said all along. Why offer advice that bleach is OK to use, if one dosnt know what they are dealing with. I never said anything about Dr. Jacobson? So im not really sure where you got that from..... Only, the vet she is CURRENTLY dealing with that offered the advice of using bleach.
You said this "After all this I really can't believe that you are trying to sell your racks. You trusted your vet that this vaccine for some other disease would work - it didn't, and now you are putting other people's animals at risk on the word of the same person. " To which i agreed, and said that another vet might be in order before going with his word alone.
reagorfu said:now i really do have to change my opinion on Jen here. she keeps getting caught doing things that are really uncool, like trying to sell off her animals and now her racks and you guys say she is still a good guy? she says sorry and acts ignorant after every time she gets caught, i hate the stupid act. just admit your trying to slip one by.
reagorfu said:she ignored the advice of Dr. Jacobsen and use his name to make it sound like he said it was OK for her to get rid of her snakes. if i were him i would have nothing to do with her now either. why would he want his name to look bad?
reagorfu said:so what if she spent $15,000 on trying to fix her collection, how is that in anyway helping the community? why is trying to save your investment helping the community? to make it worse, she did not listen to the one guy who specialises in this sort of thing, and because of that she never found anything out.
reagorfu said:if anything she tried to hurt the community by selling sick snakes and racks that may or may not have the virus on them. not a good guy, even if your pals with her.
reagorfu said:i know that it really must suck to put your animals down, but you have not listened to the person who could have helped you and now you have to deal with that. if i were her i would try and apologise to Dr. Jacobsen, he was most likely really hot after the first half of this thread, and see if that helps in you finally helping the community for real.
The BoidSmith said:Alicia,
Bleach (and lye) are currently recommended disinfectants against one of the more dangerous livestock virus that's out there, the hoof and mouth disease virus. There's plenty of research demonstrating its effectiveness, and we are not dealing of a virus that could wipe some snake collections but one that could severely hurt the country's economy.
Best.
