In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

The Formation of Exclusive Cliques...

The last time I heard a rule banning someone from linking to an outside site I could have sworn it was 1932 all over again and the nazi's were on a terror in Europe, but alas it was only kingscam. Seems Jeffy is scared of competition and him and his Hitler youth have pretty much ruined that site beyond repair. I don't see the big problem as the link provided will be active for years to come. But then again I do hate hitting dead links all the damn time.

Oh yeah I found the new kingscam ad a while back and wanted to share it with you.

I feel it is quite fitting for them. ;)

I just feel a link is need in cases like I just posted or cases like Seamus posted about. It is all about giving credit to the person you are taking info from.

I agree with Gary on this. Seeing is believing and word of mouth doesn't mean squat when it comes to proving something like Seamus was trying to prove.

thats when you do a screen shot, you can link to where that screen shot maybe however, stuff from several years or even a few months may not be there.... i believe in giving credit where credit is due thats why if i do a screen shoit i also have the link or give credit to where it came from

But wouldn't a screen shot be a trademark or copyright violation?? Where as a simple link wouldn't as you are acually there on the site in question.

So we are expected to break the law in order to post proof?? Makes so much since it isn't funny.

Who copywrites or trademarks there caresheet or web site?....maybe NIKE! or 3M! geeeezzz

So how does that apply to say... The New Or Updated Website forum? Or discussion forums when it isn't appropriate to copy the entire contents of a website, but the website best answers someone's question or is appropriate to the topic?

I also (obviously) misunderstood the application of that rule and thought that it applied only to the BOI, where posting a link to an ad or a pricelist became meaningless if the page was edited. Applying it to discussion forums may result in some tedious copying and pasting and screenshot uploading if I ever want to send someone to a website for information rather than typing it out.

Well of course someone posting in the Updated Website forum should post a link to their site. That is what that forum is there for! I mean, come on, don't you think that applying that rule to such an instance is stretching it a bit? Trying to break the intent of the rule by finding exceptions in the letter of it? In such a case, if the website in question goes away, oh well. All things considered, I think this site is going to be around a lot longer than most of the others that might get posted there.

But links pointing to care sheets on sites that may get moved or deleted altogether is aggravating. If someone wants to post the text AND a link, then that is all well and good. At least someone interested enough to want to read that information will have not lost it completely if the link no longer works.

Tedious? Cutting and pasting is not that tough to do. And all things considered, I would rather impose a little bit of tedium on a poster, then the possibility of a lot of frustration to some readers later on down the road.

As far as copyright infringement goes, certainly anyone should ask the original author for permission to copy the text. I am sure that most people would be accomodating if the link to the text accompanies the actual text itself.

In any rules I place here, I am trying to do so in a manner that is logical and consistent with solving past, present and projected future problems for this site. Heck, I can go through my own list of links I have accumulated over the years and fully a third of them are now defunct. It happens all of the time. I think it is prudent of me to try my best to prevent frustrating the readers when such things happen, by trying to put in place rules and guidelines that will go a long way towards that goal.

And as always, if someone has a better idea, let me know.

I do...........And I know for a fact many many many other people do. I am sure if I took Rich's banner and used it for my gan he would ot like that to much. Or if I started taking info off his site and using it as my own he would have a problem with it. Same goes for pics.

This isn't the proper forum to tell you just how little you know about who acually copywrites their sites or care sheets. But shocking as it may be people do and they do it for a reason, they worked all these hours putting together something and feel that someone shouldn't gain by their hard work without first asking if they can use such material.

Well I just learned a whole lot about copyrighting...I still don't think many people "copyright" there work..but you just have to check each one out.
By the way here is a link to a great site about copyrighting (while were on the subject) I will post the link, but I will not copy and paste. Because of this in the link (*None of this information may be duplicated verbatim on another web site, even for educational purposes. None of it, even if he is credited. he will find it eventually, and publishing it without his permission is a violation of his own copyright, which defeats the purpose of this page. Like this text? Link to it. Don't steal it.)
and this (With the exception of the "Business Network Services" logo, all text and images contained herein are owned by and are copyright © 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 WhatisCopyright.org. And because it's so dang long!
Also i changed it so It is not verbatim!

copyright protection

So you see sometimes you can't copy and paste.

And I just don't think the nazi's at kingscam will give anyone premission to post a screen shot here. Granted it is just a feeling I get but seeing that they like most forum board owners and scared of direct competition.

Brian, just a feeling? Hee hee.

Well to respond about the issue about "cliques" .....

I do understand about feeling left out. And no matter how you regulate a website and forum, there will always be cliques. People who find other people who like something similar (in our case reptiles) are going to form cliques. People are like cows, we like being in like groups.

The trick is, just jump the heck in. People naturally shy away from, and even shun "snobs". If you jump in with a negative attitude, you will be treated as such.

If you jump in with an open, honest, and positive attitude, you will fit in. People are drawn to honesty and a positive attitude. I am more open on a smaller forum because I feel less lost in a big one. I am slowly coming into this one. I am jumping in, but slowly. Notice all my posts are in one forum. I feel comfortable there. When I feel more comfortable, I will try other threads/forums.

I try to be as easy going and happy as possible. I put a lot of those stupid smiley faces in my posts to make sure I am coming off happy and friendly. :) :)

For those of you who know you are in a clique, be conscious of it. Be proud of it. Also bring more in!

The reptile world itself is in danger.

There are more and more laws destroying our hobby.

We need to keep that in mind. Sure we will squabble, but look at how petty it really gets. 15 freakin pages? If you read other people's posts in other places, you will see every person on this one thread is an awesome person very dedicated to the hobby. Forums are designed to pull us together in a more personal level. Instead of being just a bunch of people who happen to wander into a reptile show at the same time, we are able, through these kinds of forums, to get to know each other on a personal level.

If I didn't have this forum how would I know Brian doesn't like hairy legs? Without a forum he would just be another nameless reptile enthusiast. Or how would I know that KelliH cares so much about DanQ's animals she asks about them by name? (Guessing on the names here guys). How often can you remember you friend's freakin gecko's name?

Take a step back and think.... was I being a bitch? Was I being snobby? Was I being too sensitive? Was I not trying hard enough to infiltrate the group? Should I shave my legs every damned day so not to offend Brian? Is Bob really worth all the fuss?

There is a famous way overused phrase we can use here, but I am not going to say it! Hee hee :) I am sure you guys can guess it

I only bothered to post because not long ago (say 3 months?) I was on the complete outside looking in, wishing I could be part of the group. And I pretended I was getting into a hot tub with strangers. I didn't pee in the tub, and I made friends

After reading my post I just want to add 2 things...

I meant the remembering the friend's pet's name as a compliment. I rarely remember my friend's pet's names.

And two. I did pee in the tub! Ahhhhhhhhhhahahaha

I knew that was you, who peed in the hot tub ......IT WAS HER....IT WAS HER...SHE'S THE ONE:D

DANNI...

You did a much better job of articulating my feelings and opinions regarding forum 'cliques' than I could have done. Thank you! You can come and pee in my hot tub anytime! lol!

WELCOME TO MY S_A!
(Notice there is no "P" in my spa?)

Now I am suspicious hee hee. After confessing there is a chance I will soil your tub? See guys! This is a darn friendly group!! Who else invites an admitted "wetter" right in?

I think I just got your hint ha hahahaha !! No p? I haven't had this much fun in forever hahaha!!!!!!!! Told you I was slow!

All this talk of hot tubs has me wishing I hadn't sworn off women yet once again.

WELCOME TO MY S_A !
(Notice there is no "P" in my spa?)

dont feed my chineese or italian or apple juice before getting in your S A, it might just end up being an A, since i no longer have my ol trusty gal bladder

:eek2: :dgrin:

:lol01:

If something is listed as OT, then it can be skipped very easily. You don't have to "wade through" OT stuff. Problem solved. Some of the people posting on this thread sound as if they're jealous of other's friendship.
