Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

THIS IS A QUESTION THAT HAS NEVER BEEN ASKED

Ok, now before anyone gets the wrong impression this question has absolutly nothing to do with my sick vanilla. She is not on antibiotics!

Last year I had a 5200 gram normal female that somehow out of nowhere contracted a respiratory infection while pregnant and days away from laying her eggs. I couldent find any information about what im fixing to ask and i dont trust the reptile vet in my area.

-Can you put a pregnant snake on either injectable or oral antibiotics?

-Can you breed a snake that is on injectable or oral antibiotics? "I know im gonna catch hell from this question".

I have yet been able to find answer to these questions.

THE SNAKE DIED BEFORE SHE LAID HER EGGS :bawling:

You give yourself too much credit....both of those questions have been asked before - on this site as well as others.
Personally, I put the well being of my snakes over the dollar signs seen in any prospective clutch.

BTW....an adult BP doesn't just develop a respiratory infection and die that fast. Either you totally missed it, or you delayed treatment because you were worried about the eggs...both cases indicate negligence, IMO.

as a matter of fact dennis yes i am im looking for someone to answer this question that way, when our future herpers decide to google the questions i asked they can quickly refer to this thread and not have to deal with people like you shutting them down. i asked the question for those who dont have it in them to do so. the damage is already done i lost my snake due to the matter! im sure there is someone out there that can answer the questions without being negative or incriminating the individual asking the question. it never hurts to ask thats how we all learn. wheather it be right or wrong.

@hhmoore

i have a very small collection and check on my snakes hourly because im completly obsessed and yes i dont have anything better to do.
the snake that died was in my collection for 2.5 years and never showed any signs of an R.I. the whole ordeal only lasted 2 weeks, maybe there was something else going on there i dont know. the second i realized she was sick i took her to the vet and he perscribed baytril

I dont think its right to automatically lable me neglagent

For some reason, I doubt that.

Being days away from laying her eggs, I assume you then cut the eggs from her belly and incubated them right ? Did any of them hatch ?

Good Question, and if you found yourself in that situation, it may also be helpful to know if raising the temps would be a good idea.
-Can you breed a snake that is on injectable or oral antibiotics? "I know im gonna catch hell from this question."
I have always been told that, "there is no such thing as a stupid question."
After reading this one, I now know that is not true.
The answer is, NO !!!
I have yet been able to find answer to these questions.
If your 5200g female developed an RI while gravid, and perished after only showing symptoms for two weeks, you should have your answer from personal experience, if not through common sense.

If she was days away from laying her eggs when she contracted the RI (out of nowhere), and she died before she laid the eggs....how do you figure it was 2 weeks?

If you immediately took her to the vet, and were prescribed Baytril, did you actually administer the Baytril?

re:

I did cut the eggs out only to find there we 13 abnormally small perfectly round golf ball sized eggs. they were very soft and it did cross my mind. :shootfoot

I did put her in another room way away from my other snakes and raised the temps.

I appreciate your reply next time ill try and incubate the eggs i dident even think that was an option.

Yes i learned from my experience but if i kept it all inside nobody could look at my mistakes and live from my actions and not find out there self.

@hhmoore

The reason why i knew it was 2 weeks is Because i take notes. And yes i did administer the baytril for almost 2 weeks it quickly progressed and she began laying very contorted. With her head practilly folded in half! One day i just found her freshly dead in her tank:(

Maybe she prolonged herself from laying her eggs because she was sick?

But she was very close to laying within days

I am not pulling this story out of my butt she truly out of nowhere got a very strong R.I and died within 2 weeks the baytril dident even phase it!

Maybe we are getting off the topic a bit. I dont see the point in bringing up every detail about her death? UNLESS IT WILL HELP FIGURE OUT IF YOU CAN GIVE A PREGO SNAKE ANTIBIOTICS AND HER EGGS COME OUT UNAFFECTED :deadhorse

IF YOU CAN GIVE A PREGO SNAKE ANTIBIOTICS AND HER EGGS COME OUT UNAFFECTED

If your snake is ill, you should treat her without regard to the eggs. If she is a captive, you had to arrange for the male, she did not just go out and get herself pregnant. Her health is your responsibility.

If this happened last year, why are you bringing the situation to light now? Do you have other critters getting ill?
A year is plenty of time to have located another vet if you had issues with yours. Surely you are not going to use this board as a substitute for professional care?

Well, I guess you're right and they might really struggle with such a question. It was really wrong for me to have a little more faith that future enthusiasts would have some common sense. Let me quote your question I highlighted again.

Future readers, As you see above the question posted by Collin and the follow-up answer by him,
i lost my snake due to the matter

This is a serious matter that hasn't been answered and I'm going to my best to set your concerns aside.

"Could you breed a unhealthy sick snake?" Sure, you could but you shouldn't.

First, It is unwise to take a sick snake and house it (yes to breed it, you must put it in an enclosure with another) with another animal. Yes, this may sound silly but in this hobby the people have this crazy idea about quarantining sick and new animals to their collection. They expect for some reason that it would be basic knowledge for those breeding. Crazy ain't it?

Of course future breeders, I know what you are thinking. You might be able to bypass this criticism and still get a clutch or litter in this year by simply breeding a sick snake to another sick snake. That ought to do it. No need to watch the heath of the other snake if they are both sick.

Sorry Partner. No can do. This only leads to questions about the above quarantining, husbandry and can you believe it, concerns for the sick money making animal. Can you still believe that a majority of people think it is common sense not to put the strains of breeding on a sick animal?

If you are still with me on this best to not tell anyone that your animal is sick and breed the heck out of it in hopes it pays off this year. You know deep down you don't care enough or have the ability to keep it alive much longer anyway.

Oh Collin, you are so right. It was really stupid of me to assume someone would have the basic common sense that you shouldn't breed a sick snake or expose it to other snakes.

IM NOT TRYING TO MAKE MONEY

I BREED BALL PYTHONS FOR FUN NOT MONEY! I PROMISE. MONEY IS THE LAST THING ON MY MIND WHEN IT COMES TO MY SNAKES AND WHAT THEY PRODUCE. IT WAS A SIMPLE QUESTION MAYBE A BIT DUMB "some people would say so" BUT JUST A QUESTION. ITS NOT LIKE IM OVER HERE HORDING SICK SNAKES AND BREEDING THEM TO PAY MY BILLS...ITS A BADACE HOBBY THAT I LOVE AND PLAN ON DOING IT FOREVER. SORRY IF I PUSHED SOME BUTTONS. BUT IF YOU KNEW ME IN PERSON YOU WOULD EXPECT ME OUT OF ALL PEOPLE TO ASK QUESTIONS LIKE THAT.

ALSO THE *****SPACEBALL******OH BOY DONT GET ME STARTED THAT SNAKES GONNA MAKE ME RICH BABY LOL:dgrin:

I do wonder how adversely the antibiotics would affect the eggs. With chickens you arent supposed to eat the eggs.( I did because i just didnt care, but they do carry trace amounts of the antibiotic) but they continue laying as normal, no issues.
I do not know if people have tried hatching the eggs and what/if any issues may have arisen. ( If a snake was close to laying and had to go on them too, like your example) I would be interested to know real answers to this question too. Actually.
Not for the sake of doing it WHILE an animal is sick, If shes sick then she needs lots of time to recuperate before one even considers breeding, but more "Will it risk her by giving her antibiotics right before she lays because we're too late as is?" And, "does it damage the eggs at a point where maybe she can no longer lay them or does it in ANY way possibly, mess up internal function of the process?"

Again, just based on giving the chickens a round of tetracycline, nothing ill happend to egg production, or the eggs, really. So i am quite curious as well.

Breeding a sick animal is irresponsible in any regard.

Trying to save eggs/babies over the sick animal is also irresponsible in any regard unless the animal is in the middle of giving birth and you have to make the decision on taking one over the other. But in any case, you should make an attempt to save both. Always.

14 Days of Baytril is a bit extreme. I have to question a vet. who would advise that much Baytril. I also have to question if you unintentionally overdosed the animal with the Baytril and that caused her death. What was the dose of Baytril that was suggested, how often were you giving it and where were you injecting her?

I highly doubt an RI did it. If it did play a part in her death, however, the RI, I believe, was more than likely a symptom of another complication going on with her that was brought on by gravidity or the RI was more serious and going on for longer than you had realized.

Given the nature of Baytril, I think administering it to a gravid animal would have a negative impact on the development of offspring if not kill them all together.
